Wickham, Northern Territory
__NOTOC__ Wickham is a locality in the Northern Territory of Australia located about south-east of the territory capital of Darwin City and which overlooks Darwin Harbour. Wickham is located on land and adjoining waters associated with a peninsula of land known as Wickham Point (formerly Middle Point) which is bounded in part by the following bodies of water in Darwin Harbour - the East Arm to the north and by Middle Arm to the south-west. The locality was named after Wickham Point, which itself is named after John Clements Wickham, the British naval officer who named Darwin Harbour. Its boundaries and name were gazetted on 21 April 2004. Wickham includes the Darwin Liquefied Natural Gas Plant and the Weddell Power Station as well as the sites of the former Channel Island Leprosarium, a heritage listed place, and the former Wickham Point Immigration Detention Centre. 2016 Australian Census
The 2016 Australian census was the 17th national population census held in Australia. The census was officially conducted with effect on Tuesday, 9 August 2016. The total population of the Commonwealth of Australia was counted as – an increase of 8.8 per cent or people over the . Norfolk Island joined the census for the first time in 2016, adding 1,748 to the population. The ABS annual report revealed that $24 million in additional expenses accrued due to the outage on the census website. Results from the 2016 census were available to the public on 11 April 2017, from the Australian Bureau of Statistics website, two months earlier than for any previous census. The Channel Island Leprosarium was a quarantine station that operated as a colony for people suffering from leprosy in the Northern Territory of Australia from 1931 to 1955. Weddell Power Station
Weddell Power Station is a 129 MW natural gas-fired power station in the Northern Territory, located at Wickham, south-east of the Territory capital Darwin. Owned and operated by Territory Generation, it is the second largest power station in the Territory and supplies the Darwin-Katherine Interconnected System. History Construction began in 2007 and the station was commissioned by the Power and Water Corporation in 2008, initially with two General Electric LM6000PD gas turbines, brought online in 2008 and 2009 respectively, providing an installed capacity of 86 MW. John Clements Wickham
John Clements Wickham (21 November 17986 January 1864) was a Scottish explorer, naval officer, magistrate and administrator. He was first lieutenant on during its second survey mission, 1831–1836, under captain Robert FitzRoy. The young naturalist and geologist Charles Darwin was a supernumerary on the ship, and his journal was published as ''The Voyage of the Beagle''. After that expedition, Wickham was promoted to Commander and made captain of the ''Beagle'' on its third voyage, from 1837 and conducted various maritime expeditions and hydrographic surveys along the Australian coastline. In 1843, after his retirement from the Royal Navy, Wickham was made Police Magistrate and, later, Government Resident of the Moreton Bay District, in the Colony of New South Wales (NSW).
