Wettin () is a small town belonging to the municipality of Wettin-Löbejün in the Saale District of Saxony-Anhalt (''Saxony-Duchy of Anhalt, Ascania''), in east-central Germany. It is situated on the River Saale, just north of Halle (Saale), Halle. It is known for Wettin Castle, the ancestral seat of the House of Wettin, the former ruling dynasty of Kingdom of Saxony, Saxony, Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, Poland, the United Kingdom, Belgium, and Bulgaria. The town and its name are of West Slavs, Slavic origin. Geography Wettin lies in the Saalekreis (Saale District) of the eastern German federal state of Saxony-Anhalt, on the river Saale, which flows into the Elbe further north. Wettin belongs to the municipality of Wettin-Löbejün which borders Saxony-Anhalt's most populous city of Halle-on-the-Saale in the southeast. Löbejün
Löbejün () is a former town in the Saalekreis in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. Since 1 January 2011, it is part of the town Wettin-Löbejün. Geography Geographic location Löbejün is located north of Halle (Saale). The town is located in a hilly area in which a tributary to the Saale River, the Fuhne, flows. Geology The town is known for its ''Löbejüner porphyry''. In the northeastern part of the town coal beds are found. City classification The following towns are classified as part of Löbejün: *Gottgau *Schlettau History Löbejün was first recognized in 961 as ''Liubichun''. Rothenburg, Saxony-Anhalt
Rothenburg () is a village and a former municipality in the Saalekreis district, Saxony-Anhalt, in east-central Germany. Since 1 January 2011, it is part of the town Wettin-Löbejün. The Rothenburg Ferry, a cable ferry, crosses the Saale river at Rothenburg. History Under Nazi Germany, it was the location of Forced labour under German rule during World War II, forced labour subcamps of the prison in Halle (Saale) and of the forced labour "education" camp in Spergau.
