Westman Region, Manitoba
The Westman Region (also known as Western Manitoba or simply Westman) is an informal geographic region of the Canadian province of Manitoba located in the southwestern corner of the province. The city of Brandon is the largest urban centre in the Westman Region. Primary economic industries in the region include agriculture, food processing, manufacturing, education, petroleum, transportation, and tourism. Riding Mountain National Park and eight provincial parks are located within Westman. As of 2021, the region had a recorded population of 117,432 people. Together with the Parkland Region to the north, Westman composes the broader Prairie Mountain health region, and is provided healthcare services by Prairie Mountain Health. Minnedosa, Manitoba
Minnedosa is a town in the southwestern part of the Canadian province of Manitoba situated 50 kilometres (32 mi) north of Brandon, Manitoba on the Little Saskatchewan River. The town's name means "flowing water" in the Dakota language. The population of Minnedosa reported in the 2021 Canadian Census was 2,741. The town is surrounded by the Rural Municipality of Minto – Odanah. History Prior to the arrival of Europeans in the area of Minnedosa, the land was primarily travelled and used by the nomadic Ojibway, Cree, Assiniboine people, Assiniboine, and Sioux peoples. Rural Municipality Of Cornwallis
Cornwallis is a rural municipality located in the Canadian province of Manitoba. It surrounds the east, south and west sides of Brandon, Manitoba. Most of the land comprising the municipality is farmland, but it contains a few settlements. One of the larger settlements, Sprucewoods, sits at the north gate of Canadian Forces Base Shilo and contains a large portion of the municipal population. In the past, there has been friction between the community and the farming base that make up much of Cornwallis. The municipality is divided into six wards, each represented by one councillor. Hilltop, Manitoba
Hilltop is a rural community in the Municipality of Clanwilliam – Erickson and is a mixed agricultural area. Historically, the area was settled by Scandinavian immigrants, mainly from Sweden, starting in the 1880s. The community opened a post office in 1900 located on 19-17-17W and a one-room school was located on NE 24-17-18W. The other establishment which still is operational is a Baptist church founded by the early settlers and named after the locality. Erickson is an unincorporated urban community in the Municipality of Clanwilliam – Erickson within the Canadian province of Manitoba; it held town status prior to 1 January 2015. It is located on Highway 10 on 32-17-18W in south central Manitoba. The main industry of Erickson is agriculture. History The community was originally established as a Canadian National railway point in 1905. When a post office was opened in 1908 it was known as Avesta. It was named after a town in south-central Sweden. Shortly after, the post office was moved near the railway station site, Erickson Station. The station had been named after the Postmaster, E. The Municipality of Clanwilliam – Erickson is a rural municipality (RM) in the Canadian province of Manitoba. History The municipality was incorporated on January 1, 2015 via the amalgamation of the RM of Clanwilliam and the Town of Erickson. It was formed as a requirement of ''The Municipal Amalgamations Act'', which required that municipalities with a population less than 1,000 amalgamate with one or more neighbouring municipalities by 2015. Waskada is an unincorporated urban community in the Municipality of Brenda – Waskada within the Canadian province of Manitoba that held village status prior to January 1, 2015. It is located in the southwest corner of the province, close to the United States and Saskatchewan borders. It was settled as early as 1883 and incorporated as a village in 1948. Waskada has a population of 183, and covers a land area of 0.77 km. Though traditionally a farming community, a recent oil boom has also brought economic activity to the area.
