West Torrens Football Club
West Torrens Football Club was an Australian rules football club that competed in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL) from 1895 to 1990. In 1991, the club merged with neighbouring Woodville Football Club to form the Woodville-West Torrens Eagles. With the proposed introduction of representative Districts for clubs in the SAFA the Native Club in 1897 derived its name from Electoral district of West Torrens and based itself in the inner western suburbs of Adelaide, around the reaches of the River Torrens at Thebarton, South Australia, Thebarton and Hindmarsh, South Australia, Hindmarsh. Thebarton, South Australia
Thebarton ( ), formerly Theberton, on Kaurna land, is an inner-western suburb of Adelaide, South Australia in the City of West Torrens. The suburb is bounded by the River Torrens to the north, Port Road and Bonython Park to the east, Kintore Street to the south, and South Road to the west. Many buildings and landmarks that bear the name of Thebarton were in the history municipality, the Town of Thebarton, which included most of the adjoining suburb of Torrensville. These include the Thebarton Oval, the Thebarton croquet and bowls club, Thebarton Theatre, and Thebarton Senior College. The All-Australian team is an all-star team of Australian rules football in Australia, Australian rules footballers, selected by a panel at the end of each season. It represents a complete team, including an interchange bench, of the best-performed players during the season, traditionally led by that season's AFL Grand Final, premiership coach. The Magarey Medal is an Australian rules football honour awarded annually since 1898 to the fairest and most brilliant player in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL), as judged by field umpires. The award was created by William Ashley Magarey, then chairman of the league. The current recipients are Harry Boyd from the Norwood Football Club and Will Snelling from the Sturt Football Club. History William Magarey was born in Adelaide, South Australia. A lawyer by vocation, he had an enduring interest in sports, although he did not play football. He was, however, an active sports administrator who, in 1897, became the inaugural Chairman of the South Australian Football Association (later renamed the SANFL). The 1896 South Australian Football Association season was the 20th season of the top-level Australian rules football competition in South Australia. During the 1896 season a rule was introduced for North Adelaide and the Natives (renamed West Torrens for the 1897 season) allowing them to field an extra three players to be more competitive with the three more established clubs. The 'Port' Natives Club (renamed as West Torrens from 1897) was formed as a new Club by a group of players not tied to any District including some periphery Port Adelaide players who wanted more playing time. Charles Morris (Australian Politician)
Charles Richard Morris (13 March 1863 – 4 January 1918) was a timber merchant and politician in South Australia. History Morris was born at Noarlunga the eldest son of C. E. Morris, and moved when very young to Underdale, where he received his education. At the age of 13 he started working for Robin & Hack ( Theophilus Robin and Theodore Hack), timber merchants of Dale Street, Port Adelaide, and 10 years later, with Theophilus John Walter (1859 – 2 December 1946) as "Walter & Morris", took over the business, which survived and thrived. Politics His first public office was in 1899, when he was elected Councillor for Cleave Ward in the municipality of Port Adelaide, a position he held for four years. Charles Tucker (politician)
Charles Tucker (20 February 1857 – 5 December 1928) was Mayor of Adelaide from 1894 to 1898 and a member of the South Australian House of Assembly for the seats of Encounter Bay and Alexandra. Tucker was born at Walkerville, South Australia, son of shopkeeper William Henry Tucker (c. 1825–1899) and his wife Eliza Mary Tucker, née Samler (c. 1823–1909), who arrived in South Australia in 1836. He was educated at Unwin's school in Walkerville, J. L. Young's Adelaide Educational Institution in Parkside, followed by private tuition. He started his working life at Port Adelaide in 1879 with G. R. Selth, next became manager for Graves & Co., then partner in E. Malpas & Co., shipping and customs agents; he purchased Malpas's share in the company in 1880, becoming sole owner. John Carr (Australian Politician, Born 1871)
John Carr (15 July 1871 – 6 June 1929) was a union leader and politician in South Australia. History John Carr, M.L.C., was born at Port Adelaide a son of Thomas Carr, who worked on the wharves and was one of the founders of the Working Men's Association in 1872. He was educated at the local public school. Union activity and politics At an early age he took an active interest in the Labor movement, and was on several occasions president of the Working Men's Association, then secretary, holding that post for twelve years. During his period as an official there was little industrial disputation in the workplace, largely due to his tact and good judgment. He was delegate from that body to the United Labor Party (later the Australian Labor Party), the Eight Hours Committee, and the Trades and Labor Council. West Adelaide Football Club is an Australian rules football club in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL). Nicknamed the Bloods and commonly known as the Westies, the club's home base is Richmond Oval (currently known as Hisense Stadium under a sponsorship agreement).
