West Cliff, Preston
West Cliff is a cricket ground in Preston, Lancashire. The first recorded match on the ground was in 1870, when Preston played a United North of England Eleven. In 1936, the ground held its first first-class match when Lancashire played Gloucestershire. From 1936 to 1939, the ground played host to 4 first-class matches involving Lancashire, the last of which saw them play Glamorgan. In 1952, Lancashire returned to the ground where they played a single first-class match against Glamorgan. The ground has also played host to a combined total of 15 Second XI fixtures for the Lancashire Second XI in the Minor Counties Championship, Second XI Championship and Second XI Trophy. Still in use to this day, in local domestic cricket the ground is the home venue of Preston Cricket Club who play in the Palace Shield. Palace Shield
The Palace Shield is a cricket league based in Preston and surrounding districts in Lancashire, England. It recently celebrated its centenary, and is continuing to expand in size and improve in quality. There are 7 divisions in the main Saturday competition, 2 Sunday leagues, Twenty20 Competition and a thriving junior competition. Current Test stars such as Andrew Flintoff and Simon Kerrigan began their careers in the Palace Shield, though it remains a competition for amateurs only. Second XI Championship
The Second XI Championship is a season-long cricket competition in England that is competed for by the reserve teams of those county cricket clubs that have first-class status. The competition started in 1959 and has been contested annually ever since. All the then 17 first-class counties contested the first two competitions in 1959 and 1960; the next season when all 17 entered was 1977, though the number of teams in any one year was never lower than 14 (in 1971). Gloucestershire and Somerset entered a combined team for two seasons, 1967 and 1968. Before 1959, many second XIs of the first-class counties contested the Minor Counties Cricket Championship, winning the championship 23 times. The NCCA 3 Day Championship (previously the Minor Counties Cricket Championship) is a season-long competition in England and Wales that is contested by the members of the National Counties Cricket Association (NCCA), the so-called national counties that do not have first-class status.
