West Carroll High School
West Carroll High School, or WCHS, is a public four-year high school in Savanna, Carroll County, Illinois. WCHS serves Savanna, Mt. Carroll, Thomson and the surrounding area. The campus is located 20 miles north of Clinton, Iowa. West Carroll High School was formed in 2005 from the consolidation of Mount Carroll High School, Savanna High School, and Thomson High School. Extracurricular activities Athletics West Carroll High School competes in the Northwest Upstate Illini Conference and is a member school in the Illinois High School Association. Its mascot is the Thunder, with school colors of black, white, and forest green. Savanna, Illinois
Savanna is a city in Carroll County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,783 at the 2020 census. Savanna is located along the Mississippi River at the mouth of the Plum River. History The region was once part of the vast hunting grounds of different native American tribes, including the Sauk. Following the Treaty of St. Louis (1804) and a number of additional treaties, land in Illinois along the Eastern bank of the Mississippi River was opened to settlement by farmers. Towns such as Savanna grew their commerce by using the river for efficient transport. Savanna's earliest settlers experienced some repercussions during the Black Hawk War in 1832. The downtown area has revived since the mid-1990s closing of the army depot with the addition of new ornamental lighting to complement the late 19th century buildings. Prairie State Achievement Exam
The Prairie State Achievement Examination (PSAE) was a two-day standardized test taken by all high school Juniors in the U.S. state of Illinois. On the first day, students take the ACT, and on the second day, a WorkKeys examination and Illinois State Board of Education-developed science examination. The test is no longer administered in Illinois schools; however, it was required for all Illinois High School Students from 2001 to 2014. Areas of assessment The PSAE attempted to assess students in the areas of math, reading, science and writing. The Northwest Upstate Illini Conference is a high school conference in northwest and north central Illinois. The conference participates in athletics and activities in the Illinois High School Association. Thomson is a village along Illinois Route 84 near the Mississippi River in Carroll County, Illinois, United States. The population was 590 at the 2010 census, up from 559 at the 2000 census. Just north of the village is the United States Penitentiary, Thomson, a mostly-unused former state prison, purchased by the Federal Bureau of Prisons in 2012.
