West Boulevard–Cudell Station
West Boulevard–Cudell station (signed as West Boulevard) is a station on the RTA Red Line in Cleveland, Ohio. The station is located on the north side of Detroit Avenue ( U.S. Route 6 Alternate) at the intersection with West Boulevard in Cleveland's Cudell neighborhood. The station comprises a parking lot off Detroit Avenue with a station headhouse on the north side of the parking lot. The tracks and platform are located below the parking lot level. An enclosed bridge from the headhouse over the eastbound track leads to a stairway to the platform below. Just west of the station, the Red Line leaves the right-of-way adjacent to the old Nickel Plate Road and goes through a cut to run southwest adjacent to the old New York Central main line. History The station opened when the CTS Rapid Transit opened on Cleveland's West Side on August 14, 1955, and was originally named West 98th–Detroit. Cudell, Cleveland
Cudell () is a neighborhood on the West Side of Cleveland, Ohio. Named after Frank E. Cudell, the neighborhood has been a part of Cleveland since 1904, upon the completion of municipal annexation of the land by the city. For Cleveland City Council, the Cudell neighborhood is split between the 11th and 15th wards, and is represented jointly by council members Danny Kelly and Jenny Spencer. History Cudell is located on land which was originally the property of Franklin Reuben Elliott, a horticulturalist and fruit farmer. The land changed ownership multiple times before being purchased by Frank E. Cudell, an architect whose firm designed multiple buildings in Cleveland, including apartment buildings on W. 99th St. Cudell also deeded a portion of land along West Blvd. to the city which was used as a public park and eventually became home to Cudell Recreation Center. Red Line (RTA Rapid Transit)
The Red Line (formerly and internally known as Route 66, also known as the Airport–Windermere Line) is a rapid transit line of the RTA Rapid Transit system in Cleveland, Ohio, running from Cleveland Hopkins International Airport northeast to Tower City in downtown Cleveland, then east and northeast to Windermere. of track, including two stations ( Tri-C–Campus District and East 55th), are shared with the light rail Blue and Green Lines; the stations have high platforms for the Red Line and low platforms for the Blue and Green Lines. Shooting Of Tamir Rice
On November 22, 2014, Tamir E. Rice, a twelve year old African-American boy, was killed in Cleveland, Ohio, by Timothy Loehmann, a 26-year-old white patrolman with the Cleveland Division of Police (CDP). Rice was carrying a replica toy gun; Loehmann shot him almost immediately upon arriving on the scene. Loehmann and his partner, 46-year-old Frank Garmback, had been responding to a dispatch call regarding a male who had a gun. A caller reported that a male was pointing "a pistol" at random people at the Cudell Recreation Center, a park in Cleveland's Public Works Department. The caller twice told the dispatcher that the pistol was "probably fake", and also stated that the male was "probably a juvenile", but the dispatcher did not relay either of these statements to Loehmann and Garmback.
