West Adams Terrace, Los Angeles
West Adams Terrace is a neighborhood in Los Angeles. Dating back to 1905, it contains seven Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monuments, one property on the National Register of Historic Places and one Green Book property. In 2003, the neighborhood was designated a Historic Preservation Overlay Zone. History The earliest mention of West Adams Terrace in the ''Los Angeles Times'' was on July 16, 1905. It describes the area as a "beautiful residence subdivision" with lots being sold for $40,000. Sold by the Mesa Land Company, the community is noted as the "last piece of high ground on Adams Street". During the next few years, the ''Times'' continued to report sales in the neighborhood. On March 6, 1910, the ''Times'' announced that architect A.B. Benton had completed plans for a residence for F.M. Vale on Eleventh Avenue in West Adams Terrace. Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) is a public school district in Los Angeles, California, United States. It is the largest public school system in California in terms of number of students and the 2nd largest public school district in the United States, with only the New York City Department of Education having a larger student population. During the 2022–2023 school year, LAUSD served 565,479 students, including 11,795 early childhood education students and 27,740 adult students. Parent Trigger
A parent trigger is a legal maneuver through which parents can change the administration of a poorly performing public school—most notably, by transforming it into a charter school. The first parent trigger law was passed by the California legislature in January 2010. Similar laws have been adopted subsequently by Louisiana, Mississippi, Connecticut, Texas, Indiana and Ohio. The law has been invoked by parents in the Compton, Adelanto, Anaheim, and LAUSD school districts of California. McCarty Memorial Christian Church is a Gothic Revival architecture, Gothic Revival church of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) located at 4101 West Adams Boulevard in the historic West Adams, Los Angeles, California, West Adams district of Los Angeles, California. McCarty was founded in 1932 as a white congregation, and gained attention when it racial integration, integrated and became a multi-racial congregation in the mid-1950s. Architecture The church was built in 1932 in the English Gothic Revival architecture, Gothic Revival style. Among the Church's notable features are stained glass windows with intricate Gothic tracery, arcade (architecture), arcaded ambulatory, ambulatories, and a 130-foot landmark tower with an elaborate open bell tower, belfry. John Byers (architect)
John Winford Byers (22 March 1875 – 22 May 1966) was a Santa Monica architect and builder noted for use of the Spanish Colonial revival style. Early life Byers was born in Michigan. Byers, a graduate from Harvard University, was employed as a schoolteacher, teaching Spanish and French, at San Rafael High School and Santa Monica High School. Self-trained as a builder and architect, Byers completed his first commission, a house at 510 Lincoln Boulevard for W.F. Barnum, the principal of the Santa Monica High School in 1916. Importance Byers designed and built dozens of homes in Brentwood, Pacific Palisades, and Santa Monica from 1916 through 1946. He was fascinated with the native California architecture and its Mexican and Spanish roots.
