Wesley Methodist Church, Ipoh
Wesley Methodist Church is a Methodist church in Ipoh, Malaysia. Founded in 1894, it is the oldest Methodist church in Peninsula Malaysia. History Wesley Methodist Church, Ipoh, the oldest Methodist church in Malaya when it was founded, with the exception of the island of Penang, traces its origins back to 1894 when Rev William Edward Horley took over as head of the Methodist mission in Ipoh from Rev Tinsly William Stagg who had established the mission earlier that year but had retired due to ill health. Horley, tasked with building a school and a church, acquired a piece of land from the government and constructed a two-storey wooden building in 1895 which served as both a school and a church, which he named "Horley Hall". With the aid of local donations, Horley began construction of a new church of brick adjacent to the original wooden building in 1895, which was completed within six months, and formally opened at a ceremony on 3 May 1896. Methodism
Methodism, also called the Methodist movement, is a Protestant Christianity, Christian Christian tradition, tradition whose origins, doctrine and practice derive from the life and teachings of John Wesley. George Whitefield and John's brother Charles Wesley were also significant early leaders in the movement. William Edward Horley
William Edward Horley MBE (5 June 1870 – 2 April 1931) was a Methodist missionary and educationalist in Malaya. In addition to his missionary work for the Methodist Episcopal Church, many schools, both religious and secular, were opened in Malaya largely through his efforts. Early life Rev. William Edward Horley was born on 5 June 1870 in Bloxham, and was educated at Bloxham School, and Harley College, a missionary training school in Bromley-by-Bow. Career In 1895, Horley was sent to the Anglo-Chinese School, Singapore, founded by Bishop William Fitzjames Oldham as a missionary teacher, and in the following year was ordained in the Wesleyan Ministry. In 1896, he was sent to Ipoh to start a school, and within a month opened a school in a Malay house. Soon after, the government gave him four acres of land on which he built a church which he also used for the school which then had around 50 pupils.
