Wells Township, Fulton County, Pennsylvania
Wells Township is a township in Fulton County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 499 at the 2020 census. Wells Township was initially settled in 1760. It was originally known as Aughwick Township when it was incorporated in 1849. The name was changed to Wells Township on April 2, 1850. History The Woodvale Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992. George Croghan moved to the area in 1753 and built a home, partly to escape creditors after suffering severe losses to his business as a trader in Ohio and Kentucky. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 37.4 square miles (96.8 km2), all land. Wells Township is located in the northwestern corner of Fulton County, extending to the Broad Top plateau in the extreme northwestern corner. Broad Top
Broad Top is a plateau located in south-central Pennsylvania. It extends into Huntingdon County to the north, Fulton County to the southeast, and Bedford County to the southwest. It is bounded to the west by Saxton Mountain and Terrace Mountain, and to the east by Sideling Hill. In Bedford County, Harbor Mountain forms the southern boundary. Trough Creek Valley lies between the mountains. State Lands Pennsylvania State Game Lands 67, 121, and 267 lie on Broad Top. George Croghan
George Croghan (c. 1718 – August 31, 1782) was an Kingdom of Ireland, Irish-born fur trader in the Ohio Country of North America (current United States) who became a key early figure in the region. In 1746 he was appointed to the Onondaga Council, the governing body of the Iroquois, and remained so until he was banished from the frontier in 1777 during the American Revolutionary War. Emigrating from Ireland to Pennsylvania in 1741, he had become an important trader by going to the villages of Indigenous Peoples, learning their languages and customs, and working on the frontier where previously mostly French had been trading. During and after King George's War of the 1740s, he helped negotiate new treaties and alliances for the British with Native Americans.
