''Welcome, Mr. Washington'' is a 1944 British drama film directed by Leslie S. Hiscott and starring Barbara Mullen, Donald Stewart (actor), Donald Stewart and Peggy Cummins. It was written by Jack Whittingham based on a story by Noel Streatfeild, Noel Streetfield. The film was made by British National Films, ''Welcome, Mr. Washington'' was listed as one of the British Film Institute's "BFI 75 Most Wanted, 75 Most Wanted" lost films for some years. It emerged in early 2016 that a complete print had been discovered in a locker in London's Cinema Museum (London), Cinema Museum. It was screened at BFI Southbank in late January. It was shown on the British TV channel Talking Pictures TV on 13 October 2020. Premise During the Second World War, two sisters are left almost penniless by their father's sudden death, and so they decide to lease their estate as an airbase to the newly-arrived American forces. Hal Gordon (1894–1946) was a British film actor. A character actor, he appeared in over 90 films in both comic and straight roles. He started off as a lawyer's clerk but finding it dull he decided on the stage, making his music hall debut in 1912. George Carney
George Carney (21 November 1887 – 9 December 1947) was a British comedian and film actor. Born in Bristol, he worked in the Liverpool Cotton Exchange, in a furniture business, then in the Belfast shipyards. In 1906 he made his debut stage appearance in a pantomime in Nottingham, with his first London appearance following in 1907, as one half of a double act, Carney and Armstrong. They toured together in Britain, Australia and South Africa before Carney set up revues with another comedian, Sam Harris. From 1926, he worked on stage as a solo comedian, with such sketches as "The Fool of the Force", "The Stage Door Keeper", and "I Live in Leicester Square". He then took up a film career, appearing as a character actor in numerous British films, including ''Love on the Dole'' (1941) and '' Brighton Rock'' (1948). Sheila Mary Fraser (25 November 1920 – 29 August 2000) was an English actress. She is best known for her roles in the television serial ''A Family at War'' (1970–1971) and as Luke Skywalker's Aunt Beru in ''Star Wars'' (1977). Early life Shelagh Fraser was born in Purley, Surrey, on 25 November 1920. Her parents were John Newton Mappin Fraser and Vera Eleanor (née Beardshaw). Her father was a director of the jewellery company Mappin & Webb, and the family was sent to Australia to establish a branch of the family business there. They returned to the United Kingdom in 1924. As a child, Shelagh suffered from spinal tuberculosis, but overcame the debilitating effects of the illness. She was educated at St Christopher's School in Kingswood and won a scholarship to train as an actor at Croydon Repertory Theatre Drama School. Graham Victor Harold Moffatt (6 December 1919 – 2 July 1965) was an English comedic character actor. He is best known for a number of films where he appeared with Will Hay and Moore Marriott as 'Albert': a plump cheekily insolent street-savvy youth. Early life Moffatt was born on 6 December 1919 in Hammersmith, West London, the son of Frederick Victor Moffatt (1896–1977) and Daisy Eleonora née Whiteside (1895–1969), both of whom outlived him. He had two sisters, one being Rita Doreen Moffatt (1936–1991). He was born exactly 31 years after Will Hay, with whom Moffatt would perform with in a string of successful cinema films in the 1930s.
