Webster County is a county in the U.S. state of Iowa. As of the 2020 census, the population was 36,999. The county seat is Fort Dodge. The county was established in January 1851, one of 43 counties established by a legislative package. This county was named after Daniel Webster, an American statesman noted for his moving oratory. Webster County Courthouse (Iowa)
The Webster County Courthouse is a historic building in Fort Dodge, Iowa, United States. Built in 1902, it primarily houses local government offices for Webster County. The courthouse is the second building the county has used for court functions and county administration. It was individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981, and as a contributing property in the Fort Dodge Downtown Historic District in 2010. History After the county was organized in 1852, the community of Homer was designated the county seat. At the time it was the largest town in the region. Fort Dodge almost immediately sought to have the county seat moved there, and an election to decide the issue was held on April 7, 1856, with Fort Dodge coming out victorious. Greene County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. As of the 2020 census, the population was 8,771. The county seat is Jefferson. The county is named in honor of General Nathanael Greene. History Greene County was formed on January 15, 1851, and from 1854, self-governed. It was named after General Nathanael Greene, a hero in the Revolutionary War. The first European settler was Truman Davis. He settled on the Raccoon River. The first courthouse was built in 1856 from wood. Previously, court was held in a log cabin southeast of Jefferson. Calhoun County, Iowa
Calhoun County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. As of the 2020 census, the population was 9,927. Its county seat is Rockwell City. History Calhoun County was formed on January 15, 1851, from open land originally named ''Fox County''. It was renamed in 1853 after the seventh US vice president secessionist John C. Calhoun. When the tracks of the Illinois Central Railroad were laid through the county in 1870, the county seat was moved from Lake City to Rockwell City. The first train reached Rockwell City on August 7, 1882, and the population count doubled in the same year. The first courthouse, built of wood, burned to the ground in 1884 and the county government moved into a nearby hotel. In 1913, the current courthouse was built. On July 6, 1893, Pomeroy was struck by a tornado that measured F5 on the Fujita scale. With a damage path wide and long, the tornado destroyed about 80% of the homes in Pomeroy. Dodger Area Rapid Transit is the primary provider of mass transportation in Fort Dodge, Iowa with six routes serving the region. As of 2019, the system provided 100,941 rides over 16,998 annual vehicle revenue hours with 12 buses and 3 paratransit vehicles. The service is managed by the Mid-Iowa Development Association (MIDAS) Council of Governments. History Public transit in Fort Dodge began with streetcars in 1903, with the Fort Dodge Light & Power Co. In 1925, the streetcars were replaced with bus service. In 2020, service was temporarily discontinued from April 1 to May 21 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
