Waverly, founded in 1836, is the second largest city in Morgan County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,194 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Jacksonville Micropolitan Statistical Area. The town was named after the Waverley novels of Sir Walter Scott. Geography Waverly is in southeastern Morgan County, southwest of Springfield, the state capital. Illinois Route 104 passes through the city as Elm Street, leading northwest to Jacksonville, the county seat, and east to Auburn. Illinois Route 111 has its northern terminus at IL 104 on the west side of Waverly; it leads south to Palmyra. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Waverly has a total area of , all land. Almost all of the city drains south to tributaries of Apple Creek, a west-flowing tributary of the Illinois River. Auburn is a city in Sangamon County, Illinois, United States. The population was 4,771 at the 2010 census, and 4,681 in 2018. It is part of the Springfield, Illinois Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Auburn was originally platted in 1836, a mile north of its present location. It was one of several towns named Auburn that were platted in Illinois during the town lot boom of the 1830s. George and Asa Eastman, who had purchased a large amount of land in the area, platted the town. Their sister Hannah named it for Auburn, Maine, near their family home. The Eastman family operated a tannery and steam-powered flour mill at Auburn until 1841, when they moved to Springfield. Their departure left Auburn with about six households. Most towns founded in this period failed, but Auburn was able to survive thanks to being located on a postal stagecoach line between Alton and Springfield, so that from 1839 on Auburn was the site of the local post office. Harold Arnold "Herk" Harvey (June 3, 1924 – April 3, 1996) was an American film director, screenwriter, actor and film producer, perhaps best known for his 1962 horror film '' Carnival of Souls''. Early life Harvey was born in Windsor, Colorado, the son of Everett and Minnie R. Prewitt Harvey.
