Warfield, Virginia
Warfield is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Brunswick County, Virginia, United States. The population as of the 2010 Census was 115. The settlement is located along a former railroad. The Richmond, Petersburg and Carolina Railroad, passing through Warfield from Petersburg to Ridgeway Junction (today Norlina, North Carolina), was completed in 1900, at which point it was merged into the Seaboard Air Line (SAL). A railway station was built at some point by 1914, when the population of Warfield was estimated by the railroad to be somewhere around 100. The line (dubbed the "S" line after later mergers) continued to operate until the 1980s, and today Warfield is along the abandoned portion of the CSX Norlina Subdivision. Brunswick County is a United States county located on the southern border of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Brunswick County was created in 1720 from parts of Prince George, Surry and Isle of Wight counties. Richmond, Petersburg And Carolina Railroad
The Richmond, Petersburg and Carolina Railroad was a railroad built in the early 1900s. As its name suggests, it ran from Richmond, Virginia south through Petersburg into northern North Carolina. It was a key part of the network of the Seaboard Air Line Railroad. History The Richmond, Petersburg and Carolina Railroad was chartered in 1882 by the Virginia General Assembly and was initially known as the Virginia and Carolina Railroad. After it was chartered, the railroad did not have the financial resources to begin construction. In 1897, the charter was sold to the city of Petersburg who renamed it the Richmond, Petersburg and Carolina Railroad and construction started. Seaboard Air Line
The Seaboard Air Line Railroad , known colloquially as the Seaboard Railroad during its time, was an American railroad that existed from April 14, 1900, until July 1, 1967, when it merged with the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad, its longtime rival, to form the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad. Its predecessor railroads dated from the 1830s and reorganized extensively to rebuild after the American Civil War, and by 1900 had merged together to form the SAL. Norlina Subdivision
The Norlina Subdivision is a railroad line owned by CSX Transportation in the U.S. State of North Carolina. The line currently runs from Norlina, North Carolina, to Raleigh, North Carolina, for a total of 51.2 miles. At its north end the line comes to an end and at its south end the line continues north from the Aberdeen Subdivision (North Carolina), Aberdeen Subdivision. While the current line dates back to 1840, it has been known as the Norlina Subdivision since 1967.
