Ward County, North Dakota
Ward County is a county in the U.S. state of North Dakota. As of the 2020 census, the population was 69,919, and was estimated to be 68,427 in 2024. making it the fourth-most populous county in North Dakota. The county seat and the largest city is Minot. Ward County is part of the Minot, North Dakota metropolitan area as comprising all of McHenry, Renville, and Ward Counties. History The Dakota Territory legislature created the county on April 14, 1885, with areas partitioned from Renville, Stevens, and Wynn counties (Stevens and Wynn counties are now defunct). The county government was not organized at that date; the organization was effected on November 23 of that year. The county was named for Mark Ward, chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Counties during the session. Burlington was the county seat; this was changed to Minot in 1888. Des Lacs River
The Des Lacs River is a river in central North America which flows through Saskatchewan and North Dakota. It originates in southeastern Saskatchewan and joins the Souris River, of which it is the primary tributary, in Burlington, North Dakota. Natural history The Des Lacs River was formed by catastrophic meltwater release from two large glacial lakes about 10,000 years ago. The Des Lacs river is perennial, exhibiting many old oxbow lakes, meander scars, and relict channels. Prior to settlement, numerous riverine wetlands, ponds, and marshes were maintained by periodic flooding. With settlement of the region, the Des Lac river was significantly modified by drainage and channelization, and by construction of many low head dams along the river. North Dakota Highway 28
North Dakota Highway 28 (ND 28) is a north–south state highway in the U.S. state of North Dakota. The southern segments southern terminus is at ND 37 south of Ryder and the northern terminus is at ND 23 north of Ryder. The northern segments southern terminus is at U.S. Route 2 (US 2) in Berthold and the northern terminus is a continuation as Saskatchewan Highway 8 at the Canada/ North Dakota border. North Dakota Highway 5
North Dakota Highway 5 (ND 5) is a east–west state highway in North Dakota. Its route is in the extreme north part of the state, near the Canada–United States border. The eastern terminus is located about four miles (6 km) east of Joliette at the Red River where the highway continues east as Minnesota State Highway 175. The western terminus is at North Dakota's western border about west of Fortuna where the highway continues west and turns into Montana Highway 5. The highway is mostly a two-lane road. Route description ND 5 begins at the Montana state line near Westby, Montana, and goes east for 12 miles. Then it merges with US 85 and passes through Fortuna. Seven miles east of Fortuna, US 85 splits off southward, and ND 5 continues alone for six miles before merging with ND 42.
