Wapping Autonomy Centre
Wapping Autonomy Centre (also known as The Anarchist Centre) was a self-managed social centre in Wapping from late 1981 to 1982. The project was initially funded by money raised by the benefit single ''Persons Unknown''/''Bloody Revolutions'', as well as benefit gigs by Crass and The Poison Girls. Project The centre was set up in a rented space in Metropolitan Wharf, Wapping in 1981. The initial costs were paid using funds raised from a benefit single. It was a split single composed of ''Persons Unknown'' by The Poison Girls and ''Bloody Revolutions'' by Crass. The warehouse had been suggested by Andy Martin (English musician), Andy Martin from the anarchist Little A printers who worked in the building. Self-managed Social Centre
A self-managed social center, also known as an autonomous social center, is a self-organized community center in which Anti-authoritarianism, anti-authoritarians put on voluntary activities. These autonomous spaces, often in multi-purpose venues affiliated with anarchism, can include bicycle workshops, infoshops, libraries, #Free schools, free schools, meeting spaces, free stores and concert venues. They often become political actors in their own right. Cold War (band)
Cold War is an American band from Orange County, California, United States, who are signed to notable independent hardcore specialist label, Indecision Records. Their music is described variably as metalcore, hardcore punk and melodic death metal. They have released two albums on this label. The band's first album was '' From Russia With Love'', where they play tribute to their heavy metal influences by covering Iron Maiden's "The Trooper". The band's sound is influenced by singer Steve Helferich, who worked in Sweden with his previous band, Welcome To Your Life, and parts of the band's instrument tracking were done in Gothenburg, Sweden. Highbury Corner
Highbury is an area of North London, England, in the London Borough of Islington. Highbury Manor Highbury was once owned by Ranulf, brother of Ilger, and included all the areas north and east of Canonbury and Holloway Roads. The manor house was by what is now the east side of Hornsey Road, near the junction with Seven Sisters Road. After the manor decayed, a new manor house was built in 1271 to the south-east; to differentiate it from the original manor and because it was on a hill, it was called Highbury, from which the area takes its name. The site for Highbury Manor was possibly used by a Roman garrison as a summer camp. During the construction of a new Highbury House in 1781, tiles were found that could have been Roman or Norman. The Garage, London
The Garage is a live music and club venue in Highbury, North London. It opened in 1993 and has a capacity of 600. The upstairs room, also known as the Grace, has a capacity of 150. The venue has hosted a number of underplays, with the Killers, Jack White, Mumford & Sons, Suede, Wolf Alice, Sugababes and The 1975 being among some of the most recent acts to play the venue. Other acts who have passed through the doors include Green Day, Muse, Arctic Monkeys, Franz Ferdinand, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Paramore, Oasis, My Chemical Romance and the Creatures (Siouxsie Sioux's second band). Upper Street
Upper Street is the main street of the Islington district of inner north London, and carries the A1 road. It begins at the junction of the A1 and Liverpool Road, continuing on from Islington High Street which runs from the crossroads at Pentonville Road and City Road and runs roughly northwards from outside the main entrance to Angel Underground station, then past the Business Design Centre, then splits at Islington Green (where Essex Road, formerly named Lower Street, branches off), then past The Screen On The Green cinema, past Islington Town Hall, ending at Highbury & Islington tube station on Highbury Corner, where the A1 carries on as Holloway Road, part of the Great North Road. Old Kent Road
Old Kent Road is a major thoroughfare in South East London, England, passing through the London Borough of Southwark. It was originally part of an ancient trackway that was paved by the Romans and used by the Anglo-Saxons who named it Wæcelinga Stræt (Watling Street). It is now part of the A2, a major road from London to Dover. The road was important in Roman times linking London to the coast at Richborough and Dover via Canterbury. It was a route for pilgrims in the Middle Ages as portrayed in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, when Old Kent Road was known as Kent Street. The route was used by soldiers returning from the Battle of Agincourt. In the 16th century, St Thomas-a-Watering on Old Kent Road was a place where religious dissenters and those found guilty of treason were publicly hanged. Ambulance Station, Southwark
The Ambulance Station was a music venue that hosted Punk rock, punk, post-punk, Independent music, indie and experimental music bands. It was located within a Squatting, squatted building on the Old Kent Road in the London Borough of Southwark during the mid-1980s, and was set up by the experimental music group Bourbonese Qualk. History The building, designed by W. E. Riley, was built as a fire station by London County Council between 1903 and 1904. It replaced an older engine-house from 1869. The council acquired the neighbouring buildings to this older station and demolished them all to make space for the new one. Once constructed, it was in use by the London Fire Brigade, Fire Brigade until 1969, when it was closed after a new station was built on Cooper's Road. It is Listed building, Grade II listed. Squatting
Squatting is the action of occupying an abandoned or unoccupied area of land or a building (usually residential) that the squatter does not own, rent or otherwise have lawful permission to use. The United Nations estimated in 2003 that there were one billion slum residents and squatters globally. Squatting is practiced worldwide, typically when people find empty buildings or land to occupy for housing. In developing countries and least developed countries, shanty towns often begin as squatted settlements. In African cities such as Lagos, much of the population lives in slums. Centro Iberico
Centro Iberico, London, in the early 1970s was an international anarchist support centre founded and presided over by Spanish Civil War veteran Miguel Garcia. After leaving Chalk Farm in 1976, and moving into a squatted school building in Notting Hill, London, it became a self-managed social centre, venue and studio for the Anarcho-punk scene, surviving into the early 1980s. Origins Centro Iberico was established in central London in 1970 by Spanish Civil War veteran, and twenty years a prisoner of Franco, Miguel García García. Ronan Bennett (born 14 January 1956) is an Irish novelist and screenwriter. Albert Meltzer
Albert Isidore Meltzer (7 January 1920 – 7 May 1996) was an English anarcho-communist activist and writer. Early life Meltzer was born in Hackney, London, of Jewish ancestry, and educated at The Latymer School, Edmonton. He was attracted to anarchism at the age of fifteen as a direct result of taking boxing lessons where he met Billy Campbell, a seaman, boxer and anarchist. As the Spanish Revolution turned into the Spanish Civil War, Meltzer became active organising solidarity appeals. He involved himself with smuggling arms from Hamburg to the CNT in Spain and acted as a contact for the Spanish anarchist intelligence services in Britain. At this time he had a part as an extra in Leslie Howard's film '' Pimpernel Smith'', as Howard wanted more authentic actors playing the anarchists.
