Wallace High School (Lisburn, Northern Ireland)
The Wallace High School is an 11–18 co-educational voluntary grammar school and sixth form in Lisburn, County Antrim, Northern Ireland. History It was founded in 1880 by a bequest from the estate of Sir Richard Wallace, local landowner, Unionist MP and philanthropist, and was originally named Lisburn Intermediate and University School. It was built on a site fronting the Antrim Road. A board of trustees took charge in 1900 to oversee the development of the growing school and, when they renamed it in 1942 in memory of its founder, they adopted the word ''Esperance (Hope)'' as the school's motto from the Wallace coat of arms. The post-war years witnessed rapid growth in pupil numbers and consequent accommodation provision. Land was purchased at Clonevin Park, initially for playing fields, and when the Antrim Road site proved inadequate, the decision was taken to build a new school in these extensive grounds. Lisburn ( ; ) is a city in Northern Ireland. It is southwest of Belfast city centre, on the River Lagan, which forms the boundary between County Antrim and County Down. Burney Cup
The Burney Cup (Ulster Schoolboys' Senior Hockey Cup) is an annual competition involving the strongest schools affiliated to the Ulster Branch of the Irish Hockey Association. The competition is held in the spring term of each school year and progress through to the final is via an open draw. The most successful school is Friends' School Lisburn with 20 wins (16 outright wins and 4 shared wins). The current holder is Royal Belfast Academical Institution. Eligibility To play in the competition, boys must be 19 years of age and under on 1 April immediately preceding the draw. The draw for the Cup takes places in early January. Edwin Poots
Edwin Poots (born 27 May 1965) is a British politician from Northern Ireland, serving as Speaker of the Northern Ireland Assembly since February 2024. He served as leader of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) from May to June 2021. He was first elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) in 1998. In 2007, First Minister Ian Paisley appointed Poots to the Northern Ireland Executive as Minister of Culture, Arts and Leisure. Poots left office after Peter Robinson became First Minister in 2008. Drew Nelson (politician)
Drew Nelson (3 August 1956 – 10 October 2016) was a Northern Irish solicitor and politician. He was the Grand Secretary of the Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland from 2005 to 2016. Biography Nelson grew up on a family farm in the town land of Listullycurran, Dromore, County Down. He went on to study at Wallace High School and then to Queen's University Belfast and attained his Bachelor of Laws in 1981. He set up his own law practice two years after graduation. He joined the Ulster Defence Regiment (UDR) while studying at Queen's University Belfast in 1977 and rose to the rank of Lieutenant. One such incident that led him to joining the Security Forces was on 7 April 1976, when three members of the Herron family from Dromore were murdered by the IRA in their drapery store. William Brian Maginess, QC (10 July 1901 – 16 April 1967), was a member of the Government of Northern Ireland, who was widely seen as a possible successor to The 1st Viscount Brookeborough as Prime Minister of Northern Ireland. Life He was born in 1901, the son of William George Maginess, a Lisburn solicitor, and his wife Mary Sarah Boyd.
