Walker, Oregon
Walker is an unincorporated community in Lane County, Oregon, United States. It is located about north of Cottage Grove on Oregon Route 99, near the Coast Fork Willamette River. A station with the name "Walkers" was established on the Siskiyou Line of the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1881. Walker post office was established in 1891 by Francis Smith, who bought some property from area pioneer Mrs. J. F. Walker and named the office for her, though the locale was being called Walker at least ten years earlier. The name of the station was named to match the post office in 1898. The office was discontinued in 1925. As of 1990, the former Walker schoolhouse was being used as a shed and shop. Walker Union Church was built in 1895. Cottage Grove, Oregon
Cottage Grove is a city in Lane County, Oregon, United States. Its population was 10,643 at the 2020 census. It is the third largest city in Lane County. It is on Interstate 5, Oregon Route 99, and the main Willamette Valley line of the CORP railroad. History Cottage Grove post office was established in 1855 east of present-day Creswell. It was named by its first postmaster, G. C. Pearce, whose home was in an oak grove. In 1861, the office was moved to the present site of Saginaw; then in the late 1860s, to the southwesternmost part of present-day Cottage Grove, on the west bank of the Coast Fork Willamette River. When the Southern Pacific railroad was built through the area in the 1870s, Cottage Grove station was placed more than half a mile northeast of the post office, on the river's east side. Oregon Route 99
Oregon Route 99 is a state highway that runs between the southern border of Oregon, and the city of Junction City. Oregon Route 99 was formed from parts of the former U.S. Route 99; it shares much of its route with I-5, but much of it is also independent. Between Portland and Junction City, the highway is forked into two routes: Oregon Route 99E and Oregon Route 99W. Route description Oregon Route 99 technically starts at an interchange with Interstate 5 at exit 11, south of Ashland. The Köppen climate classification divides Earth climates into five main climate groups, with each group being divided based on patterns of seasonal precipitation and temperature.
