WRU Division Five South East
The Welsh Rugby Union Division Five South East (also called the SWALEC Division Five South East for sponsorship reasons) is a rugby union league in Wales first implemented for the 1995/96 season. Competition format and sponsorship Competition There are 11 clubs in the WRU Division Five South East. During the course of a season (which lasts from September to May) each club plays the others twice, once at their home ground and once at that of their opponents for a total of 20 games for each club, with a total of 110 games in each season. Teams receive four points for a win and two point for a draw, an additional bonus point is awarded to either team if they score four tries or more in a single match. No points are awarded for a loss though the losing team can gain a bonus point for finishing the match within seven points of the winning team. Hirwaun RFC
Hirwaun is a village and community at the north end of the Cynon Valley in the County Borough of Rhondda Cynon Taf, South Wales. It is NW of the town of Aberdare, and comes under the Aberdare post town. At the 2001 census, Hirwaun had a population of 4,851. increasing at the 2011 census to 4,990. The village is on the Heads of the Valleys Road and at the southern edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park. Etymology Hirwaun (also formerly spelled as Hirwain and Herwain) derives from two common Welsh toponyms "Hir" meaning long and "Gwaun" meaning moorland. Writing in 1887, Rev. Thomas Morgan stated that the correct name is ''Hirwaun Gwrgant'', meaning Gwrgan's "Waun". This name comes from its association with Gwrgan ab Ithel (1033 - 1070), a king of Morgannwg who is said to have freely given a portion of the waun (named "Y Waun Hir") to his poor subjects and all other Welshmen for raising corn, and the breeding of sheep and cattle. Senghenydd RFC
Senghenydd Rugby Football Club are a Welsh rugby union club based in Senghenydd in South Wales. The club formed during the 1898/99 season built around the immigrant workers coming from port areas around Wales to find employment in the newly sunk Senghenydd coal mines. Early history 1904 saw the great religious revivalSmith (1980), p. 120. throughout South Wales led by the lay preacher, Evan Roberts. Rugby was seen as a wicked sport leading to violence and drunkenness, and Roberts managed to convert so many to his cause that Senghenydd RFC disbanded due to a lack of players. In 1907 a rugby team reformed under the name Senghenydd Bluebells RFC, before reverting to Senghenydd RFC. On 14 October 1913 Britain's worst ever mining disaster occurred at Senghenydd Colliery, amongst the 439 victims were five members of Senghenydd RFC. Wattstown ( cy, Aberllechau) is a village located in the Rhondda Valley in the county borough of Rhondda Cynon Taf, Wales. Located in the Rhondda Fach valley it is a district of the community of Ynyshir. Prior to mid 19th century industrialisation the area was once little more than a wooded area, sparsely populated by farmsteads. With the coming of the coal industry Wattstown became a busy, densely populated village, but with the closure of the collieries Wattstown suffered an economic downturn that still affects the village today. Wattstown is named after Edmund Hannay Watts, who at one time owned the National Colliery in Wattstown. Penygraig Rugby Football Club is a Welsh rugby union team based in Penygraig, Wales. Penygraig RFC formed in 1877, one of the earlier rugby clubs to emerge, and by the 1890s were a strong voice in the Welsh Rugby Union, one of four clubs from the Rhondda Valley that held WRU representation. Early history In the 1887/1888 season, Penygraig played 19 matches, winning 12, drawing 1, and losing 6. Some notable wins was against Bridgend RFC and Penarth RFC. Old Penarthians Rugby Football Club is a Welsh rugby union team based in Penarth, Wales. The Old Penarthians were formed out of an association set up on 7 December 1923 by Penarth County School. The society formed was the Penarth County School Old Boys Association and it covered the games of cricket, hockey, and rugby union. In their first full season during 1924/25 the club won ten matches, drew two, and lost nine. Old Illtydians Rugby Football Club is a rugby union team from the city of Cardiff, Wales. The club is a member of the Welsh Rugby Union and is a feeder club for the Cardiff Blues. The club also runs mini and junior sides. Old Illtydians were formed in September 1928 as Saint Illtyds Old Boys Rugby Club. St. Illtyds school was opened in 1924 and therefore had a limited range of 'old boys' to choose from. This resulted in a team with an average age of seventeen. The school used various grounds until 1932 when they secured the use of the Blackweir pitch, a ground they would play from for the next thirty five years. Due to the club's connections to St. Illtyds school the team managed to keep playing for all but two years during the Second World War.
