WKOW (channel 27) is a television station in Madison, Wisconsin, United States, affiliated with ABC and owned by Allen Media Group. The station's studios are located on Tokay Boulevard on Madison's west side, and its transmitter is located on South Pleasant View Road in the city's Junction Ridge neighborhood. History WKOW-TV (the suffix was dropped from the call sign in 2009) was launched on June 30, 1953, as Madison's first television station. The station was originally aligned with CBS and owned by the Monona Broadcasting Company, led by a group of local area businessmen along with WKOW radio (AM 1070, now WTSO). The WKOW call sign was an acknowledgment to Wisconsin's dairy industry, and featured a smiling bovine (or cow) alongside the emphasized "K-O-W" of the call sign. WMTV (channel 15) is a television station in Madison, Wisconsin, United States, affiliated with NBC and The CW. The station is owned by Gray Media and maintains studios and transmitter facilities on Forward Drive in the Greentree neighborhood on Madison's southwest side. WMTV was the second television station to air in Madison, beginning in July 1953 just days after WKOW, and has been its NBC affiliate since signing on the air. Founded by a company controlled by the Bartell Group, it was sold to the Wisconsin Valley Television Company (later Forward Communications Corporation) in 1963. WMTV was successful and competitive in local news ratings under Forward in spite of the economic disadvantages inherent in being an ultra high frequency (UHF) station. It is the flagship television property of locally based Morgan Murphy Media, which has owned the station since its inception. The Badger Television Network was an American state network that operated for eight months from January 1958 until it ceased operations on August 8 of that year. WXOW (channel 19) is a television station in La Crosse, Wisconsin, United States, affiliated with American Broadcasting Company, ABC and owned by Allen Media Group. The station's studios and transmitter are located on Houston County, Minnesota, County Highway 25 in La Crescent, Minnesota. WQOW (channel 18) in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, Eau Claire operates as a semi-satellite of WXOW, extending the ABC signal into the Chippewa Valley of Wisconsin. WFRV-TV (channel 5) is a television station in Green Bay, Wisconsin, United States, affiliated with CBS. Owned by Nexstar Media Group, the station maintains studios on East Mason Street in Green Bay and a transmitter north of Morrison, Wisconsin. WFRV-TV traces its history to WNAM-TV, which began broadcasting in January 1954 from studios in Neenah. Owned by the Neenah-Menasha Broadcasting Company, it was the only ultra high frequency (UHF) outlet in northeastern Wisconsin at a time when UHF stations faced severe technical and economic handicaps against very high frequency (VHF) stations.
