Victoria Bridge, Devonport
The original Victoria Bridge on the Mersey River Devonport, Tasmania, Australia was opened in 1901 thus reducing the reliance on boat and ferry traffic. The Victoria Bridge partly collapsed as a result of the continuous boring by teredo worms in 1924. In 1973 a new concrete bridge replaced the old, battered Victoria Bridge, with the Bass Highway, a national highway (Highway 1), being the main arterial road dividing the suburb of Devonport from the suburbs of Miandetta and Stony Rise on the western side of the city and East Devonport and Ambelside on the eastern side of the city. A permanent speed camera at East Devonport near Victoria Bridge was installed 18 November 2015. On a crossing of the Victoria Bridge there is a good view of the port and its facilities. Bass Highway (Tasmania)
The Bass Highway is a highway in Tasmania, Australia. It connects the three cities across the north of the state – Burnie, Devonport and Launceston. The road was named due to its proximity to the Bass Strait. It is a part of the National Highway, designated as National Highway 1, together with the Midland and Brooker highways in Tasmania. Mersey River (Tasmania)
The Mersey River is a river on the north-west coast of Tasmania, Australia. The city of Devonport is situated at the river's mouth on Bass Strait. The source of this river is Lake Meston. From here the river feeds itself into Lake Youd. Lees Creek is a tributary to the Mersey River and it feeds into Lake Orion, Lake Merope, Lake Eros, Lake Artemis and Junction Lake prior to the Mersey. Devonport ( ; Palawa Kani: ''Tiagarra'') is a city in northern Tasmania, Australia, located on the lands of the Pannilerpanner clan of the Palawa nation. It is situated at the mouth of the Mersey River. Devonport had an urban population of 26,150 at the 2021 Australian census. The Department of Infrastructure, Energy and Resources (DIER) was the department of the Government of Tasmania responsible for management of the state's infrastructure. It reported to several ministers including Jim Cox and Michael Aird. In 2014, it merged with the former Department of Economic Development, Tourism and the Arts to form the new Department of State Growth. The Department was divided into divisions including a Corporate Services Division and the Office of the Secretary. Teredo (bivalve)
''Teredo'' is a genus of highly modified saltwater clams which bore in wood and live within the tunnels they create. They are commonly known as "shipworms;" however, they are not worms, but marine bivalve molluscs (phylum ''Mollusca'') in the taxonomic family ''Teredinidae''. The type species is ''Teredo navalis''. The tunneling habit of species in the genus inspired the name of the Teredo network tunneling protocol. The submarine HMS ''Teredo'' may also have been named after this genus, which works invisibly, below the surface, and can be very damaging to marine installations made of wood.
