Vice Chief Of The Defence Force (Australia)
The Vice Chief of the Defence Force (VCDF) is the military deputy to the Chief of the Defence Force (CDF) of Australia, and acts as the CDF in his absence under standing acting arrangements. Vice Admiral David Johnston, the incumbent VCDF, has held the position since 5 July 2018. Responsibilities Created in 1986, the VCDF is a three-star officer in the Australian Defence Force (lieutenant general, vice admiral, or Air marshal (Australia), air marshal). The position's standing responsibilities include: Joint Doctrine, Education, Training and Evaluation; Joint Logistics; Reserve Policy; and Joint Capabilities, Commitments and Concepts. The Australian Defence Force (ADF) is the military organisation responsible for the defence of the Commonwealth of Australia and its national interests. It consists of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN), Australian Army, Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) and several "tri-service" units. Douglas Riding
Air Marshal Douglas John Stuart Riding, (born 6 May 1943) is a retired senior Royal Australian Air Force commander and a former Vice Chief of the Defence Force. Riding was born in the Sydney suburb of Burwood, New South Wales, on 6 May 1943. Following a secondary education at Manly Boys High School, he joined the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) in June 1962 as an aircrew cadet, and graduated as a pilot the following year. He was posted for operational service during the Vietnam War for a tour from April to December 1969 with the United States Air Force's 19th Tactical Air Support Squadron. Admiral Christopher Alexander Barrie, (born 29 May 1945) is a retired senior officer of the Royal Australian Navy, who served as Chief of the Defence Force from 4 July 1998 to 3 July 2002. General John Stuart Baker (24 February 1936 – 9 July 2007) was a senior Australian Army officer. Entering the Royal Military College, Duntroon in 1954, his career culminated with his appointment as Chief of the Defence Force from 1995 to 1998, the most senior position in the Australian Defence Force. Baker also served as the inaugural Director of the Defence Intelligence Organisation from 1990 to 1992, Vice Chief of the Defence Force from 1992 to 1995, and was author of the highly influential 1988 "Baker Report".
