Vermont State Auditor
The Vermont State Auditor of Accounts is one of six constitutional officers in Vermont, elected statewide every two years. The Office provides an independent and objective assessment of Vermont's governmental operations. The current Auditor is Douglas R. Hoffer, a Democrat/ Progressive. He was first elected to office in 2012. Until 1870, Vermont elected their Auditor of Accounts for one-year terms. National Republican Party
The National Republican Party, also known as the Anti-Jacksonian Party or simply Republicans, was a political party in the United States that evolved from a conservative-leaning faction of the Democratic-Republican Party that supported John Quincy Adams in the 1824 presidential election. Known initially as "Adams-Clay Republicans" in the wake of the 1824 campaign, Adams's political allies in Congress and at the state-level were referred to as "Adams's Men" during his presidency (1825–1829). National Union Party (United States)
The National Union Party was the temporary name used by the Republican Party and elements of other parties for the national ticket in the 1864 presidential election that was held during the Civil War. For the most part, state Republican parties did not change their name. The temporary name was used to attract War Democrats, border state voters, Unconditional Unionist, and Unionist Party members who might otherwise have not voted for the Republican Party. The party nominated incumbent Republican President Abraham Lincoln of Illinois with life-long Democrat Andrew Johnson of Tennessee for Vice President. They won the electoral college 212–21. Dugald Stewart (Vermont Politician)
Dugald Stewart (September 26, 1821 – March 23, 1870) was a Vermont politician who served as state Auditor of Accounts. Biography Born in Middlebury, Vermont on September 26, 1821, Stewart was the brother of Vermont Governor John Wolcott Stewart. He graduated from Middlebury College in 1842, studied law and attained admission to the bar. Rather than practicing law Stewart opted for a business career, becoming an accountant and paymaster for the Rutland and Burlington Railroad, where he worked from 1848 to 1855. From 1855 until his death Stewart was Clerk of the Courts in Addison County. Stewart served in the Vermont House of Representatives from 1860 to 1862. He also served in local offices, including Justice of the Peace. Jeptha Bradley
Jeptha Bradley (December 31, 1802 – June 8, 1864) was a mid-1800s Vermont political figure who served in several elected and appointed offices, including Vermont Auditor of Accounts. Early life Bradley was born in Fairfield, Vermont on December 31, 1802. He studied law and was admitted to the bar, afterwards establishing a practice in Franklin and Grand Isle Counties. A Whig, from 1835 to 1839 Bradley served as Sheriff of Franklin County. Start of political career Bradley later moved to St. Albans and served in local and county offices including Justice of the Peace and High Bailiff. He was appointed Inspector of Customs for the station in Alburgh in 1845. In 1847, Bradley was named Postmaster in Highgate Springs. Additional activities Bradley was active in the Episcopal church, and served as a Delegate to the 1822 and 1850 annual state conventions. The Free Soil Party was a short-lived coalition political party in the United States active from 1848 to 1854, when it merged into the Republican Party.
