Vajas (meaning ''echo'' in North Sámi) was a Sámi- Norwegian band with Kristin Mellem on violin and vocals, Nils Johansen on guitars, computers and synthesizers and the famous Sami ethnic yoiker Ánde Somby on vocals and yoik (or joik, a type of traditional chanting or singing). The band debuted in 2003 and toured internationally. In October 2006 Vajas released its first album, ''Sacred Stone''. The band is currently working on getting the release distributed in Germany and the UK with other countries to follow. In 2009, a minor YouTube fad involved remaking or lipsynching to the song "Sparrow of the Wind". Band members Kristin Mellem is a classically trained composer and violinist who has done a lot of musical projects. She has composed and performed music both in smaller settings and with full orchestras. Ánde Somby
Ánde Somby, born in Buolbmat, Norway, is a traditional Sami joik artist and an associate professor at the Faculty of Law at the University of Tromsø, specializing in Indigenous Rights Law. Somby has been active yoiker since 1974. He has also been producing records with other yoikers. In 1985 he produced the LP record and MC cassette "Ean Máššan" with his father Aslak Somby (1913–2008) and mother Karen Kristine Porsanger Somby born 1920. in 1991 he produced the record Ravddas Ravdii with ''Inga Juuso''. In 2000 he produced the record "Deh" and in 2003 Deh2 with his uncle Ivvár Niillas. Somby is only one of few Sami with Ph.D. in law (dr. juris). Somby's Ph.D. is titled "Juss som retorikk". In that thesis he reconnected the Nordic jurisprudence to the classical rhetorical tradition which dates back to ''Plato'' and ''Aristotle''. Bel Canto (band)
Bel Canto is a Norwegian music duo, originally a trio, fronted by vocalist Anneli Drecker, and signed originally to Crammed Discs. Biography Bel Canto was formed in 1985 in Tromsø by Geir Jenssen (synthesizer, programming), Nils Johansen (synthesizer, violin, bass guitar, guitar) and vocalist Anneli Drecker. The group was one of the first Norwegian bands to sign a record contract abroad. The trio moved to Brussels in 1986 and had their debut album '' White-Out Conditions'' released by Crammed Discs the following year. After a second album, '' Birds of Passage'' (1990), Jenssen left the band for a solo career as Biosphere. The group had a commercial breakthrough with '' Shimmering, Warm and Bright'' in 1992, and won the Spellemannprisen award twice, in 1992 and 1996. Kristin Mellem
Kristin Mellem (born 21 March 1965) is a Norwegian musician (violin), composer and conductor known for her involvement in Northern Norway's musical scene. She was educated at and Bergen Music Conservatory (1984–1990) and has worked as a violin teacher in Balsfjord, Bergen, Hadsel, and Tromsø. Furthermore, she has been named regional musician and conductor of the Vesterålen Symphony Orchestra, part of the (1987–1997), Tromsø Symphony Orchestra (1993–present), associated with Hålogaland Teater (, 2002) and Rikskonsertene (1997–2000). Mellem has contributed to the Eventyr festival in Tromsø since 1998, toured with Boknakaran (2001–2002), and contributed to releases with Moya på Tvoya. Riddu Riđđu () is an annual Sámi music and culture festival held in Olmmáivággi (Manndalen) in the Gáivuotna (Kåfjord) municipality in Norway. The goal of the festival is to bring forward both Sámi culture and that of other indigenous peoples. Translated to English, the name of the festival is "small storm at the coast". The festival has permanent support from the Ministry of Culture and Church Affairs, the Sámi parliament, Troms county and Kåfjord municipality. A joik or yoik (anglicised, where the latter spelling in English conforms with the pronunciation; also named , , , or in the Sámi languages) is a traditional form of song in Sámi music performed by the Sámi people of Sapmi in Northern Europe.
