Võ Phiến
Võ Phiến (October 20, 1925 – September 28, 2015) was a Vietnamese archivist, editor and author of short stories, novels, essays, poems, and literary criticism. An influential writer in the Vietnamese diaspora, Phiến’s writings deal with themes relating to exile, war, and modern life. He was already an established writer in Vietnam before seeking refuge in the United States after the fall of Saigon The fall of Saigon, known in Vietnam as Reunification Day (), was the capture of Saigon, the capital of South Vietnam, by North Vietnam on 30 April 1975. As part of the 1975 spring offensive, this decisive event led to the collapse of the So ... in 1975, where he lived and continued to write until his death in 2015. Vietnamese Diaspora
Overseas Vietnamese (, , or ) refers to the Vietnamese diaspora living outside of Vietnam. The global overseas Vietnamese population is estimated at 5 to 6 million people. The largest communities are in the United States, with over 2.3 million Vietnamese Americans, alongside significant populations in France, Australia, and Germany. Smaller but historically important communities are also found in Southeast Asia, particularly in Cambodia. The Vietnamese diaspora emerged through several major waves of migration. Early migration occurred during the French colonial period in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, followed by large-scale refugee exodus after the Vietnam War in 1975. Exile
Exile or banishment is primarily penal expulsion from one's native country, and secondarily expatriation or prolonged absence from one's homeland under either the compulsion of circumstance or the rigors of some high purpose. Usually persons and peoples suffer exile, but sometimes social entities like institutions (e.g. the Pope, papacy or a Government-in-exile, government) are forced from their homeland. In Roman law, denoted both voluntary exile and banishment as a capital punishment alternative to death. Deportation was forced exile, and entailed the lifelong loss of citizenship and property. The fall of Saigon, known in Vietnam as Reunification Day (), was the capture of Saigon, the capital of South Vietnam, by North Vietnam on 30 April 1975. Vietnamese boat people () were refugees who fled Vietnam by boat and ship following the end of the Vietnam War in 1975. This migration and humanitarian crisis was at its highest in the late 1970s and early 1980s, but continued well into the early 1990s. The term is also often used generically to refer to the Vietnamese people who left their country in a mass exodus between 1975 and 1995 (see Indochina refugee crisis). This article uses the term "boat people" to apply only to those who fled Vietnam by sea. The number of boat people leaving Vietnam and arriving safely in another country totaled almost 800,000 between 1975 and 1995. Many of the refugees failed to survive the passage, facing danger from pirates, over-crowded boats, and storms. According to author Nghia M.
