Västra Frölunda IF Handball is Västra Frölunda IF's handball section, founded in 1930, the same year the main association was formed. The men's handball section has been successful, with 18 seasons in Elitserien. History Västra Frölunda was promoted to the top division, at the time known as Allsvenskan, in 1954, but was immediately relegated. They were promoted again in 1970. In 1970–71 they finished third in the league and qualified for the playoffs. They won against IF Saab in the semifinals, but were defeated by SoIK Hellas in the finals. They finished second in the league in 1973–74, but lost against IF Saab in the semifinals. Västra Frölunda won the regular season in 1974–75. However, they were eliminated by HK Drott in the semifinals. Västra Frölunda were relegated in 1977 but were promoted again two years later. Handball (also known as team handball, European handball, Olympic handball or indoor handball) is a team sport in which two teams of seven players each (six outcourt players and a goalkeeper) pass a ball using their hands with the aim of throwing it into the goal of the opposing team. Handbollsligan ''(literally, "The Handball league")'' is the highest league in the league system of Swedish handball, and comprises the top 14 Swedish handball teams. The first season began in 1931–32. The season ends with a playoff. Structure The season starts in September with a regular season comprising 14 teams meeting each other twice. A total of 26 rounds. The eight best teams after the regular season qualifies for the play-off. The 14th team is relegated, and the 11th, 12th and 13th team plays matches against the second, third and fourth from Allsvenskan to qualify for next season's Handbollsligan. Idrottsföreningen Saab was a Swedish sports club from Linköping, Östergötland County founded in 1941 by people working at Saab and most known for its association football and handball teams. They took part in the 1973 Allsvenskan. In 1981, IF Saab merged with BK Derby to form Linköpings FF. HK Drott Halmstad is a handball club, based in Halmstad, Sweden. The club has won the Swedish Championship eleven times, last in 2013. Together with Redbergslids IK, HK Drott have dominated Swedish handball between 1984 and 2003. Idrottsklubben Heim (IK Heim) were a Swedish handball club from Gothenburg, founded in 1923. They have been List of Swedish men's handball champions, Swedish champions 7 times. They won the title in 1950 (by defeating Örebro SK, Örebro in the final), 1955, 1959, 1960 and 1962 (by winning the league). They were relegated from the Handbollsligan, top level in 1965 and did not return until 1974. In 1980, Heim reached the semifinals of the EHF Cup Winners' Cup, Cup Winners' Cup, where they lost to Spanish club CB Alicante, CB Calpisa.
