Vändra () is a borough () in Põhja-Pärnumaa Parish in Pärnu County, Estonia. It has a population of 2,191 (in 2016) and an area of 3.28 km² (1.27 sq mi). Sights On Old Church Hill there is an underground cemetery called Kabelias, which was used from the 15th to the 18th century, which today is under heritage protection. Vändra church, dedicated to St. Martin, belongs to the EELK Vändra Martin parish, located in Kirikumäe in the village in 1787. The church built in 1841 is single-aisled, the tower was added in 1841. A memorial stone has been erected over the former wooden church and manor. The Vana-Vändra manor house is a ruin, the town's stage stands in the park. The Uue-Vändra manor house was located on the banks of the Käru river, which was burned down during the 1905 revolution and was destroyed in the Second World War after the Paide road rolled. Karl Von Ditmar
Karl Bernhard Woldemar Ferdinand von Ditmar (sometimes ''Carl von Ditmar'') ( in Vändra – in Tartu) was a Baltic German geologist and explorer, who travelled in and contributed to the scientific understanding of Kamchatka. Life and work Karl von Ditmar was born in Vändra, present-day Estonia as the son of jurist Woldemar Friedrich Carl Ditmar and Charlotte Ditmar, ''née'' Stackelberg. He studied at the University of Tartu in 1841–1847, where he befriended Leopold von Schrenck and Karl Maximovich, as well as Karl Ernst von Baer. Ditmar began studying agricultural science but after some time changed to mineralogy and geology under Otto Wilhelm Hermann von Abich and Hermann Martin Asmuss. Anton Õunapuu
Anton Õunapuu VR II/3 (7 November 1887 – 2 April 1919) was an Estonian PE teacher, soldier, and the founder of the scouting movement (Estonian: ''Eesti skaudiliikumine'') in Estonia. Early life and work as a PE teacher Anton Õunapuu was born as a son of a farmer near Vändra in 1887. He started his studies in Vaki Municipality School (1897–1901) and graduatuated from Vändra Parish School in 1903. Studied in the Gymnastics Institute of University of Helsinki with the support of Estonian Sports Association Kalev. He graduated in 1913 and returned to Estonia. From 1913 until 1918 he worked as a PE teacher in numerous schools in Tallinn, most notably in Tallinn Secondary School of Science (Tallinna Reaalkool) and in Tallinn Secondary School of Commerce (Tallinna Kommertskool). Artur Lind
Artur Lind (6 April 1927, Vändra – 30 November 1989, Tartu) was an Estonian biologist and is considered to be the founder of molecular biology in Estonia. Lind studied to be a surgeon at the University of Tartu. Due to an allergic reaction to analgesics used at the time, he was unable to continue working as a surgeon and moved to the faculty of biochemistry instead. He is credited with the discovery of 5S ribosomal RNA. His remains are buried in Vana-Jaani cemetery in Tartu. Age Oks (born 29 May 1970) known professionally as Agnes Oaks, is an Estonian former ballet dancer, who was a principal dancer with English National Ballet. Early life Age Oks was born in Vändra to an Estonian father, Juhan Oks, and a Russian mother, Valentina Georgevna Trofimova Oks. She started ballet at age 10, and her mother sent her to audition for the Estonian State Ballet School, and started training there. She later entered the Bolshoi Ballet School. Tanel Kangert (born 11 March 1987) is an Estonian former road bicycle racer, who competed as a professional from 2008 to 2022. Early life Kangert was born in Vändra, Estonia. He attended kindergarten alongside fellow Estonian cyclist Rein Taaramäe. Career Kangert signed his first professional contract with in 2008, after riding with the team as a stagiaire in the 2007 season. Ain-Ervin Mere
Ain Mere (from birth to Estification Ervin Martson; 22 February 1903 – 5 April 1969) was an Estonian military officer in World War II. During the German occupation of Estonia, he served in the German-controlled Estonian Security Police and SD. Career He was born in Vändra and fought voluntarily in the Estonian War of Independence. In early 1919, Mere was wounded while serving on an armored train and was sent to the rear. According to the KGB archives, he was drafted as an agent of NKVD in 1940–1941. Mihkel Lüdig ( – 7 May 1958) was an Estonian composer, organist and choir conductor. As a composer, he particularly worked on a cappella choral songs. Lüdig is considered one of the major organisers of large-scale musical events in 20th century Estonia.
