Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi ( ; born ) is an American documentary filmmaker. She was the director, along with her husband, Jimmy Chin, for the film ''Free Solo'', which won the 2019 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. The film profiled Alex Honnold and his free solo climb of El Capitan in June 2017. Vasarhelyi and Chin's first scripted film venture was '' Nyad'', a biopic chronicling Diana Nyad's quest to be the first person to swim from Cuba to Florida. Early life and education Vasarhelyi grew up in New York City, and is the daughter of Marina Vasarhelyi, a college administrator, and Miklós Vásárhelyi, a college professor. Her father is a Hungarian-born Brazilian and her mother is from Hong Kong. Vasarhelyi is a graduate of The Brearley School. She holds a B.A. in Comparative Literature from Princeton University. Miklós Vásárhelyi
Miklós Vásárhelyi (9 October 1917 – 31 July 2001) was a Hungarian journalist and politician from Hungary. He was the press secretary in the government of Imre Nagy during the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. After Hungary’s democratic transition in 1990, he became a member of the National Assembly (Hungary), National Assembly. Life He was born October 9, 1917, in Fiume and studied at Sapienza University of Rome, Rome University and at the law faculty of the University of Debrecen. He became a member of the Hungarian Communist Party in 1938. In 1942, he was sent into forced labor, like other Jews in Hungary. Pál Vásárhelyi
Pál Vásárhelyi (18 June 1938 – 14 September 2008) was a Hungarian competitive ice dancer. With Györgyi Korda, he was the 1964 Winter Universiade champion, the 1964 Blue Swords champion, and a seven-time Hungarian national champion. The duo competed at four World and six European Championships. They placed among the European top five in 1963 (Budapest, Hungary), 1964 (Grenoble, France), and 1965 (Moscow, Soviet Union). Vásárhelyi skated at Budapesti Lokomotív and Budapesti Spartacus. He retired from competition in 1965. Victor Vasarely (; born Győző Vásárhelyi, ; 9 April 1906 – 15 March 1997) was a Hungarian-French artist, who is widely accepted as a "grandfather" and leader of the Op art movement. His work titled ''Zebra'', created in 1937, is considered by some to be one of the earliest examples of Op art. Life and work Vasarely was born in Pécs and grew up in Piešťany (then Pöstény) and Budapest, where, in 1925, he took up medical studies at Eötvös Loránd University. In 1927, he abandoned medicine to learn traditional academic painting at the private Podolini-Volkmann Academy. In 1928/1929, he enrolled at Sándor Bortnyik's private art school called ''Műhely'' (lit. "Workshop", in existence until 1938), then widely recognized as Budapest's center of Bauhaus studies. Cash-strapped, the ''műhely'' could not offer all that the Bauhaus offered. Instead, it concentrated on applied graphic art and typographical design.
