Václav Robert Bozděch
Colonel Václav Robert Bozděch (15 July 1912 in Soběkury– 27 February 1980 in Devon) was a Czech people, Czech air gunner of World War II. He was a British Royal Air Force (RAF) squadron gunner and commander of training centers. Early life Bozděch was trained as a locksmith. Before the war he became a soldier and a trained air gunner. World War II He arrived in Great Britain via Poland and France, where he briefly served in the French Air Force. In the UK, he first served as an air gunner with No. 311 Squadron RAF. After having flown his first tour he became an instructor and commander of the training centres. Bozdech was accompanied through the war by a German Shepherd dog, which he found as a puppy after a crash landing while in the French Air Force. He and his fellow Czech airmen named the dog Antis (dog), Antis, after the Soviet Tupolev SB, ANT-40 bomber. Their story was later told in at least three books. Soběkury
Soběkury () is a municipality and village in Plzeň-South District in the Plzeň Region of the Czech Republic. It has about 600 inhabitants. Administrative division Soběkury consists of two municipal parts (in brackets population according to the 2021 census): *Soběkury (380) *Horušany (221) Geography Soběkury is located about southwest of Plzeň. Radio Prague International () is the official international broadcasting station of the Czech Republic. Broadcasting first began on 31 August 1936 near the spa town of Poděbrady. 1948 Czechoslovak Coup D'état
In late February 1948, the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia (KSČ), with Soviet backing, assumed undisputed control over the government of Czechoslovakia through a coup d'état. It marked the beginning of four decades of the party's rule in the country. The KSČ enjoyed a period of popularity following the reestablishment of pre-war Czechoslovakia. After a successful performance during the 1946 parliamentary election, party leader Klement Gottwald became prime minister of a coalition government at the behest of President Edvard Beneš. By summer 1947, however, the KSČ's popularity had significantly dwindled, and the party was expected to be soundly defeated in the May 1948 elections. Tupolev SB
The Tupolev ANT-40, also known by its service name Tupolev SB ( – ''Skorostnoi Bombardirovschik'' – high speed bomber) and development co-name TsAGI-40, was a high speed twin-engined three-seat monoplane bomber, first flown in 1934. The Tupolev design was advanced but lacked refinement, much to the dismay of crews, maintenance personnel, and Stalin, who pointed out that "there are no trivialities in aviation". Antis (dog)
Antis (1939–1953), also known as Ant, was a dog who received the Dickin Medal in 1949 from the People's Dispensary for Sick Animals for bravery in service in England and North Africa during the Second World War. Discovery During the winter of the Phoney War at the start of the Second World War, Václav Robert Bozděch and Pierre Duval were sent on a reconnaissance mission over the German front in their twin-seater Potez 630 aircraft from the French airbase at Saint-Dizier. It was hit by anti-aircraft fire and crashed in no-mans land between the French and German lines. Bozděch helped the injured Duval to an abandoned farm house nearby, wherein the Czech airman discovered a German Shepherd puppy on the floor in the kitchen.
