Vraîe Cally Balthazaar
Vraîe Cally Balthazaar (born 9 April 1985) is a Sri Lankan politician, media personality, activist and researcher serving as Mayor of Colombo since 16 June 2025. She is a member of the National People's Power and is the second woman to hold the office, after Rosy Senanayake. Early life and education Balthazaar was born in 1985 and completed her primary and secondary schooling at Methodist College, Colombo. She earned a bachelor's degree in fashion/apparel design from Northumbria University in 2010. She then received a postgraduate diploma and a Master's degree in Gender and Women's Studies from the University of Colombo in 2020. Biodegradable Waste
Biodegradable waste includes any organic matter in waste which can be broken down into carbon dioxide, water, methane, compost, humus, and simple organic molecules by micro-organisms and other living things by composting, aerobic digestion, anaerobic digestion or similar processes. It mainly includes kitchen waste (spoiled food, trimmings, inedible parts), ash, soil, dung and other plant matter. In waste management, it also includes some inorganic materials which can be decomposed by bacteria. Such materials include gypsum and its products such as plasterboard and other simple sulfates which can be decomposed by sulfate reducing bacteria to yield hydrogen sulfide in anaerobic land-fill conditions. In domestic waste collection, the scope of biodegradable waste may be narrowed to include only those degradable wastes capable of being handled in the local waste handling facilities. The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB; , , ) is a centrist political alliance led by Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa. It is the largest opposition coalition in the Parliament of Sri Lanka since 2020. The alliance was formed with the approval of the working committee of the United National Party (UNP) to contest in the 2020 Sri Lankan parliamentary election. The Colombo Municipal Council is the municipal governing body of Colombo, the largest city and financial centre in Sri Lanka. 2025 Sri Lankan Local Elections
Local elections were held in Sri Lanka on 6 May 2025 According to the Election Commission of Sri Lanka, of the 17,296,330 registered voters nationwide, 17,156,338 were eligible to vote in this election. Voters elected 8,793 members for a four-year term to 339 of the 341 local authorities in the country, comprising 28 municipal councils, 36 urban councils, and 275 pradeshiya sabhas.
