Volta River Authority
The Volta River Authority (VRA) is the main generator and supplier of electricity in Ghana. They are also responsible for the maintenance of the hydro power supply plant. Establishment The VRA was established by the Volta River Development Act, Act 46 of the Republic of Ghana on 26 April 1961. The main purpose of the VRA is to generate and supply electricity for Ghana's needs. It is also responsible for managing the environmental impact of the creation of the Volta Lake on the towns and people bordering the lake. The VRA maintains a national energy supply grid and although it started with hydroelectric power, it is now branching into other types of energy such as thermal energy. Takoradi Power Station
The Takoradi Power Station is a thermal power station at Aboadze, east of Sekondi-Takoradi, Ghana. It consists of three power plants. The Aboadze power station became operational in 1997 and is the first fossil fuel power station operated by the Volta River Authority. Official inauguration was held on 15 October 2000 in participation of President Jerry Rawlings. It is a combined cycle power plant with an installed capacity of 330 MW combined by two 110 MW GE Frame 9E combustion gas turbines, and one 110 MW steam turbine generator. The plant is fueled primarily by light crude oil. Oil is received through a single point mooring connected to the plant by approximately undersea pipeline. Oil is stored in four storage tanks with a capacity of each. The secondary fuel is distillate fuel oil, which is used for start-up and shutdown of the plant. Osagyefo Barge
The Osagyefo Barge is a 125 MW barge-mounted gas turbine electric power generating station located at Effasu in the Western Region of Ghana. The 77 m long barge is equipped with a pair of single-cycle heavy-duty gas turbine units built by Ansaldo that have a combined generating capacity of 125 MW. It is designed to burn either natural gas or diesel fuel. The 125 MW power barge was ordered by the Ghanaian government in 1995 with financial assistance from the Overseas Economic Cooperation Fund of Japan. It was intended to generate electricity from natural gas obtained from offshore production fields. The Kpong Dam, also known as the Akuse Dam, is a hydroelectric power generating dam on the lower Volta River near Akuse in Ghana. It is owned and operated by Volta River Authority. Akosombo Hydroelectric Project
The Akosombo Dam, also known as the Volta Dam, is a hydroelectric dam on the Volta River in southeastern Ghana in the Akosombo gorge and part of the Volta River Authority.
