Virginia Beach Sportsplex
The Virginia Beach Sportsplex is a sports complex in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The name is most commonly attached to the main soccer-specific stadium within the complex, which opened in 1999. It has a permanent seating capacity of 6,000 on two decks of seating, though it can be expanded upwards to 17,000 for American football games. It was the first soccer-specific venue built from the ground up in the United States. The Sportsplex is located across the street from the Princess Anne Athletic Complex and near the Veterans United Home Loans Amphitheater. The main stadium was the home field of the Hampton Roads Piranhas, a women's team in the USL W-League (1995–2015), W-League, which became the ''de facto'' top women's league in the country after the demise of the Women's United Soccer Association. United Football League (2009–2012)
The United Football League (UFL) was a professional American football minor league in the United States that began play in October 2009 and played four seasons, the final one being cut short in October 2012. Semi-professional sports are sports in which athletes are not participating on a full-time basis, but still receive some payment. The Norfolk Blues are a Mid-Atlantic Rugby Football Union Division I/Championship Division Club in Norfolk, Virginia. Founded in the Spring of 1978 as a result of a merger between the Norfolk Rugby and Norfolk Irish Rugby Clubs. The Virginia Beach Piranhas were an amateur American soccer team based in Virginia Beach, Virginia, United States. Founded in 2006 as the Virginia Beach Submariners as part of the development system of the now-defunct USL First Division franchise, the Virginia Beach Mariners, the team played in the USL Premier Development League (PDL), the fourth tier of the American Soccer Pyramid, in the South Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference.
