Villingili (Addu Atoll)
Villingili is a resort island in Addu Atoll, Maldives. In 1997, the government of the Maldives contracted the American firm Abonmarche to build a large resort and marina on the island to attract tourism. In 2000 the government withdrew this contract, and finding no other bidders, awarded it to another firm called "Energy Tours" to build a smaller resort. Energy Tours defaulted on this contract. In 2005, Maldives President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom contracted Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts, a Hong Kong–based company, to build the first luxury resort in Addu Atoll. The resort was developed by Addu Investment Private Limited (70%) and the Maldivian Government (30%). Villingili (Alif Dhaal Atoll)
Alifu Dhaalu Atoll (also known as Southern Ari Atoll or Ari Atholhu Dhekunuburi) is an administrative division of the Maldives. The separation of Ari Atoll (formerly Alifu Atoll) on March 1, 1984, into a Northern and a Southern section formed the two most recent administrative divisions of the Maldives, namely Alifu Alifu Atoll and Alifu Dhaalu Atoll. Alifu Dhaalu Atoll lies south of the line between the channels of Himendhoo Dhekunukandu and Genburugau Kandu. There is an ancient mosque in Fenfushi island having wooden decorated ceilings and lacquerwork panels. Buddhist remains, including a stupa, have been found in Ariadhoo Island. Whale sharks are year-round residents of Alif Dhaal Atoll. Villingili ( in Mahal ) or Viligilla ( in Huvadhoo ) ( Huvadhoo ވިލިގިއްލާ, Mahal: ވިލިނގިލި) is one of the inhabited islands of Gaafu Alif Atoll, which is an administrative division of the Maldives. History In former times, Vilingili boat owners used to decorate their fishing boats with rich and varied decorative patterns. This practice was discontinued in the 1970s. Archaeology According to Mr. Ibrahim Lutfi there was a mound in an area of the island that has been eroded away by the currents on the reef. This mound was probably an ancient Buddhist stupa. Geography The island is south of the country's capital, Malé. It is located on the northeastern rim of Huvadu Atoll. Traditionally this island is also known as 'Huvadu Atoll Vilingili'. Villingili, administratively known as Villimalé is an island in the North Male Atoll and is considered the fifth district of Malé City. It lies about two kilometres (1.2 mi) west of Malé island and is reachable via local ferry service that operates 24 hours, between Malé and Villimalé. Location within Malé City Villimalé is to the west of Malé Island: History Villingili was historically inhabited and was often burned and looted by frustrated Malabar pirates who could not penetrate the defenses of Malé. In 1961, the original residents of Villingili were resettled in Hulhulé to free up agricultural land near Malé. A prison was built on the island in 1962, and a resort was opened in 1973. Villimalé used to be a resort earlier before it became a residential island.
