Villedieu-le-Château () is a commune in the Loir-et-Cher department in central France. Geography Villedieu-le-Château borders the commune of La Chartre-sur-le-Loir (Sarthe) and marks the most eastern extension of the department and of the Bas-Vendômois. The Niclos stream traverses the commune. Population Sights The village is dominated by the medieval fortified enceinte of a ruined medieval monastic foundation established by the Abbey of the Trinity at Vendôme. The cult of Our Lady of Pity was transferred to the 15th-century parish church, which possesses early painting on wood, and which is the site of an annual pilgrimage in September. La Chartre-sur-le-Loir (, literally ''La Chartre on the Loir'') is a commune in the Sarthe department in the Pays de la Loire region in north-western France. The surviving church dedicated to St. Vincent was designed by the architect Delarue c. 1830. It possesses mid-nineteenth century stained glass depicting the saint and other personages. Before the early nineteenth century there were also churches dedicated to St. Mary Magdalen and to St. Nicholas, and in close proximity a priory. The Bas-Vendômois is a small district in central- western France, consisting of the 14 communes of the canton of Montoire-sur-le-Loir, in the arrondissement of Vendôme, ''département'' of Loir-et-Cher, France. The capital of Bas-Vendômois is Montoire-sur-le-Loir. History The area corresponds to the central portion of the east-west flowing Loir valley. Before the French Revolution the area depended administratively on Vendôme and was part of the Orléanais province, but ecclesiastically on the Diocese of Le Mans in the Tours province. The division thus corresponds to that between the late Roman provinces of '' Tertia Lugdunensis'' (Tours) and '' Quarta Lugdunensis'' (Sens) and the civitates of the Cenomani and of the Carnutes respectively.
