Vilcabamba District, La Convención
Vilcabamba District is one of fourteen districts of the La Convención Province in the Cusco Region in Peru. The capital of the province is the Centro Poblado Lucma, which has an elevation of . Vitcos was an important city of the Neo-Inca State (1537-1572). Its ruins are now preserved as Rosaspata and Nusta Hisp'ana (the "White Rock"). The capital of the Neo-Inca state, also called Vilcabamba, is located in neighboring Echarate District. Its ruins are also known as Espiritu Pampa. Geography The Willkapampa mountain range traverses the district. Some of the highest peaks of the district are listed below: Most of the peaks listed rise to more than elevation above sea level. The Apurímac River is the natural border between the Vilcabamba District and the Ayacucho Region. Within the district it receives waters from Hatun Wayq'u. The districts of Peru () are the third-level country subdivisions of Peru. They are subdivisions of the provinces of Peru, provinces, which in turn are subdivisions of the larger regions of Peru, regions or departments. There are 1,838 districts in total. Overview A 1982 law requires a minimum of residents in an area for a new district to be legally established: 3,500 if it is located in the rainforest, 4,000 in the Andes highlands and 10,000 in the Chala, coastal area. In the dry Andean area, many districts have less than 3,500 inhabitants due to low population density in the area. In some cases, their populations have decreased in comparison to the days when they were founded. Districts that are located at very high altitudes tend to be scarcely populated. Echarate District
Echarate District (or Echarati) is one of fourteen districts of the province La Convención in Peru. The town of Echarte, near the Urubamba River, is the capital of the district. In 2016, part of Echarte district was incorporated into the newly created Megantoni District. Vilcabamba, the capital of the Neo-Inca State from 1539 to 1572, is in Echarate District. The Neo-Inca State was the last refuge of the Inca Empire until it fell to the Spaniards and their indigenous allies in 1572, signaling the end of Inca resistance to Spanish rule. Subsequently, Vilcabamba was abandoned and its location forgotten. In 1911 explorer Hiram Bingham mistakenly identified the abandoned ruin of Machu Picchu as Vilcabamba, but he also visited a ruin called Espiritu Pampa by local Peruvians.
