Vidmantas Jažauskas
Vidmantas Jažauskas (born 30 November 1961 in Biržai, Lithuanian SSR) is a Lithuanian painter, book illustrator, poet, and social activist. Biography In 1991, he graduated from the Vilnius Art Institute. He teaches at the Biržai Vladas Jakubėnas Music School. Since 1982, he has participated in exhibitions, Solo exhibitions organized by Vilnius, Kaunas, Panevezys, Siauliai. Since 2000, he has been a member of the Lithuanian Artists' Association. Since 2001 he has been a member and the leader of the Biržai artists group "8+". He is married to Eglė; they have 5 children: Justinas, Paulius, Ieva, Danielius, Augustinas. Biržai
Biržai (, also known by several alternative names) is a city in northern Lithuania. Famous for its reconstructed Biržai Castle manor, the whole region is renowned for its many traditional-recipe beer breweries. Name The exact origin of the city name is not known, but it is derived from the Lithuanian word (which means ''birch''). The name of the city in other languages includes ; , (and pre-1917 ); . It is simplified to ''Birzai'' in English. History The city's first written mention dates to 1455. The construction of Biržai Castle began in 1586, and the town was granted Magdeburg Rights in 1589. The Vilnius Academy of Arts (, previously ''State Art Institute of Lithuania'') in Vilnius, Lithuania, grants a variety of degrees in the arts. History The Academy traces its roots back to the creation of the Architecture Department at Vilnius University in the former Grand Duchy of Lithuania in 1793. The Department of Painting and Drawing was established in 1797, followed by the Department of Graphics (Engraving), and in 1805 – the Departments of Sculpture and History of art. In 1832, the university was closed, and reopened in 1919 with departments of Painting, Sculpture and Graphic Art.
