Video Installation
Video installation is a contemporary art form that combines video technology with installation art, making use of all aspects of the surrounding environment to affect the audience. Tracing its origins to the birth of video art in the 1970s, it has increased in popularity as digital video production technology has become more readily accessible. Today, video installation is ubiquitous and visible in a range of environments—from galleries and museums to an expanded field that includes site-specific art, site-specific work in urban or industrial landscapes. Popular formats include monitor work, projection, and performance. The only requirements are electricity and darkness. Contemporary Art
Contemporary art is a term used to describe the art of today, generally referring to art produced from the 1970s onwards. Contemporary artists work in a globally influenced, culturally diverse, and technologically advancing world. Their art is a dynamic combination of Medium (arts), materials, methods, concepts, and subjects that continue the challenging of boundaries that was already well underway in the 20th century. Diverse and eclectic, contemporary art as a whole is distinguished by the very lack of a uniform, organising principle, ideology, or "-ism". Contemporary art is part of a cultural dialogue that concerns larger contextual frameworks such as personal and cultural identity, family, community, and nationality. Jan Hoet
Knight Jan Hoet (; 23 June 1936 – 27 February 2014) was the Belgian founder of SMAK (''Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst'' or Municipal Museum for Contemporary Art) in Ghent, Belgium. Biography Jan Hoet was born in Leuven, Belgium. Throughout his career, he was often referred to in the press as a former boxer (he pursued the sport in college) and several times expressed an admiration for Mike Tyson. In the late 1960s and early 1970s he and photographer Rony Heirman made some comics together. His international reputation was first established by "Chambres d'Amis," an innovative exhibition he organized in Ghent in 1986. In that show, about 50 American and European artists were invited to create works for 50 private homes in Ghent, which were then opened to the public for several weeks. Madeleine Altmann
Madeleine Altmann is a contemporary video artist. She was born in Brazil and lives in the United States. Overview Altmann has been active in visual arts for most of her life. Starting in photography, she moved on to television, interactive telecommunications and video art. She is best known for her seminal case against Viacom in protecting freedom of speech on TV and as an Internet pioneer. Marsia Alexander-Clarke
Marsia Alexander-Clarke is an American video installation artist. She is a Guggenheim Fellow. Personal life and education Marsia Alexander-Clarke was born in 1939 in Valparaíso, Chile. Her parents were missionaries from the United States. Due to personal and family reasons, Alexander-Clarke rarely attended elementary school and instead roamed Valparaiso and the surrounding countryside alone. Eija-Liisa Ahtila (born 1959 in Hämeenlinna, Finland) is a contemporary visual artist and filmmaker who lives and works in Helsinki. Ahtila is most known for her multi-panel cinematic installations. She experiments with narrative storytelling in her films and cinematic installations. Gustavo Aguerre
Gustavo Aguerre (born 1953 in Buenos Aires, Argentina) is an artist, photographer, curator, writer, and theatre designer. Career Aguerre studied at the Munich Art Academy between 1974 and 1976. He subsequently moved to Sweden. In collaboration with his wife, Ingrid Falk, he set up an art collective in Stockholm called FA+ in 1992.
