Vancouver Peninsula is a locality in Western Australia. It is located about from Albany on the other side of King George Sound. The only residential structure on the Vancouver Peninsula is Camp Quaranup at Geake Point. Vancouver Peninsula is part of the traditional settlement area of the Mineng Aboriginal people. The name refers to George Vancouver, a British officer, and explorer who was the first European to visit the bay in 1791. Originally, Vancouver Peninsula was part of Frenchman Bay in which was split from in 2000. The City of Albany is a local government area in the Great Southern region of Western Australia, about south-southeast of Perth, the capital of Western Australia. Albany is a Legislative Assembly electorate in the state of Western Australia. Albany is named for the port and regional city of Western Australia which falls within its borders. Kojonup, Western Australia
Kojonup is a town south-east of Perth, Western Australia along Albany Highway in the Great Southern region. The name Kojonup refers to the "Kodja" or stone axe made by Aboriginal Australians, from the local stone. History The Noongar people are the traditional owners and inhabitants of Kojonup. Specifically, the Noongar people of Kojonup today are descendants of the Kaneang language group and their neighbours, such as the Koreng, Pinjareb and Menang. Historically the Noongar people drank from the local freshwater spring and hunted game with the traditional Noongar "kodj", or stone axe. Both Kojonup and The Kodja Place are named after the historically significant implement. King George Sound (Western Australia)
King George Sound ( nys , Menang Koort) is a sound on the south coast of Western Australia. Named King George the Third's Sound in 1791, it was referred to as King George's Sound from 1805. The name "King George Sound" gradually came into use from about 1934, prompted by new Admiralty charts supporting the intention to eliminate the possessive 's' from geographical names. The sound covers an area of and varies in depth from . Situated at its western shore is the city of Albany. Camp Quaranup
Quaranup, also known a Camp Quaranup and Albany Quarantine Station, was once a quarantine station in Albany, Western Australia; it now operates as a camp for tourists. Situated in a Class A nature reserve on the Vancouver Peninsula on the shoreline of Princess Royal Harbour opposite the Port of Albany, the camp has panoramic views of Albany. The complex consists of 17 separate stone and timber-framed structures in varying architectural styles. The necessity of a quarantine station arose after a number of incidences involving sickness aboard ships arriving in Albany lead to demands for a quarantine station to be built close to the port. Mineng, also spelled Minang or Menang or Mirnong, are an indigenous Noongar people of southern Western Australia. Name The ethnonym ''Minang'' is etymologized to the word for south, ''minaq,'' which means that the tribe were defined as "southerners". Country The Minang's traditional lands encompassed some from King George Sound northwards to the Stirling Range. It took in Tenterden, Lake Muir, Cowerup and the Shannon River area.
