Van Vorst Township, New Jersey
Van Vorst was a township that existed in Hudson County, New Jersey, United States, from 1841 to 1851, that is now a neighborhood in Jersey City. The township was located on the Hudson River, to the west and north of the original territory of Jersey City and across from Manhattan. Barrow Mansion
The Dr. William Barrow Mansion is located at 83 Wayne Street between Barrow Street and Jersey Avenue in Downtown Jersey City, Hudson County, New Jersey, United States. The mansion was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 2, 1977, and is located within the Van Vorst Park Historic District, which itself was dedicated on March 5, 1980, and is roughly bounded by Railroad Avenue, and Henderson, Grand, Bright, and Monmouth Streets. The house was one of two similar homes constructed by Cornelius Van Vorst, a founder of the Township of Van Vorst and mayor of Jersey City from 1860 to 1862. The Van Vorsts were a prominent family who trace their North American roots to the third superintendent of the patroonship Pavonia, whose bowery was located at nearby Harsimus. Van Vorst House
The Van Vorst House is a colonial-era residence in Jersey City, New Jersey, USA, located at 531 Palisade Avenue (Hudson Palisades), Palisade Avenue in Jersey City Heights, The Heights. The stone house was built c.1740–1742 by descendants of the first settlers in the region. It is arguably the oldest building in Jersey City. The Van Vorsts were a prominent family who trace their North American roots the third superintendent of the patroonship Pavonia, New Netherland, Pavonia, whose Homestead (buildings), bowery was located at Harsimus, where his widow built the first stone house in the colony on the shores of the North River (Hudson River) in 1647. Grace Church Van Vorst
The Grace Church Van Vorst, is located in Jersey City, Hudson County, New Jersey, United States. The church was added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 1, 1979. The church was built in 1853 and was named after the former Van Vorst Township. The church is an English Gothic-style Episcopal church which was designed by Detlef Lienau. The building is constructed with brownstone and has a slate roof. The church was expanded in 1864 with the addition of two bays to the west and a baptistry added midway on the south side of the building. The 57-foot high square tower was added in 1912. Cornelius Van Vorst
Cornelius Van Vorst (March 7, 1822 – November 19, 1906) was the twelfth Mayor of Jersey City, serving from 1860 to 1862. Biography Cornelius and his family founded and laid out the street grid for Van Vorst Township, which was incorporated in 1841 and was dissolved when it was annexed by Jersey City in 1851. He also donated land for a town square style park that became Van Vorst Park. From 1854 to 1874, the kitchen step of the Van Vorst Mansion was known to be the slab of marble that was originally the base of the statue of King George III that was toppled by the Sons of Liberty at Bowling Green in New York. After the statue had been torn down in 1776, the slab made its way across the Hudson River and was reused in Paulus Hook as the gravestone of a Major John Smith of the Royal Highlands Regiment, the Black Watch, in 1783.
