Geography Located in the northern part of the county, it borders the following townships: * Scioto Township, Pike County - north * Union Township, Pike County - northeast corner * Jefferson Township - east * Clay Township - south * Rush Township - southwest * Morgan Township - west * Camp Creek Township, Pike County - northwest corner No municipalities are located in Valley Township, although the census-designated place of Lucasville is located in the center of the township. A civil township is a widely used unit of local government in the United States that is subordinate to a county, most often in the northern and midwestern parts of the country. Southern Ohio Correctional Facility
The Southern Ohio Correctional Facility (commonly referred to as Lucasville) is a maximum security prison located just outside Lucasville in Scioto County, Ohio. The prison was constructed in 1972. As of 2022, the warden is Donald Redwood. The prison is perhaps best known for its April 1993 riot, in which a total of 450 prisoners rioted, resulting in an 11-day standoff between rioters and law enforcement. One corrections officer and nine inmates were killed during the riot. The riot has been described as one of the largest crises in Ohio prison history and one of the longest prison sieges in U.S. history. Lucasville, Ohio
Lucasville is a census-designated place (CDP) in Scioto County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,757 at the 2010 census. Lucasville is the location of the Scioto County Fairgrounds. The Southern Ohio Correctional Facility, Ohio's one of three maximum security prisons and the location of Ohio's death house where death row inmates are executed, is located just outside Lucasville. Lucasville is served by the Portsmouth Public Library, as well as the Valley Local School District and Northwest Local School District.
