Valley Mall (Yakima)
Valley Mall is a regional enclosed shopping mall located in Union Gap, Washington, serving the Yakima area. It is the region's sole indoor mall and has 55 stores, anchored by Kohl's and Macy's (formerly The Bon Marché), The mall is located on Interstate 82 and is adjacent to outdoor shopping centers called Valley Mall Plaza, Washington Plaza, and Frontage. Collectively, the property has 80 retailers. The Valley Mall opened in 1972, under the ownership of engineering firm Morrison-Knudsen. It was purchased in 1980 by First Union Real Estate Investments for $8.9 million and later sold to Center Oak Properties in 1999. The mall was expanded by in 2002, siphoning major retailers and customers from the Yakima Mall in the city's downtown. The Yakima Mall closed in 2003. The mall's Sears store closed in December 2022 but reopened the following year. Union Gap, Washington
Union Gap is a city in Yakima County, Washington, United States. The population was 6,568 at the 2020 census. Union Gap has become the retail hub for the entire Yakima Valley as a result of Valley Mall and other thriving businesses being located here. Part of the city is within the Yakama Nation. Name The town is named for a water gap formed by the Yakima River between the Rattlesnake Hills and Ahtanum Ridge. The gap is traversed by U.S. Route 97, Interstate 82, and Thorp Road, and the BNSF Railway. History The city of Union Gap was originally named Yakima City and was officially incorporated on November 23, 1883. When bypassed by the Northern Pacific Railroad in December 1884, over 100 buildings were moved with rollers and horse teams to the nearby site of the depot. The new city was dubbed North Yakima. The Bon Marché
The Bon Marché (colloquially The Bon) was an American department store chain founded in 1890 by married couple Edward and Josephine Nordhoff. It was based Seattle, Washington, and served working-class families in the Northwestern United States. The name was inspired by the Parisian department store Le Bon Marché. The store was known for their catchy jingles, such as the following to the tune of " The Banana Boat Song": "Day-o, One Day Sale, One day only at The Bon Marché!
