Upton Railway Station
Upton railway station serves the village of Upton and the Noctorum area of Birkenhead, on the Wirral Peninsula, England. The station is situated on the Borderlands line. Transport for Wales operates the station and all trains serving it. History Upton Station was opened to passengers on 18 May 1896, as part of the Dee and Birkenhead Railway. The station became part of the North Wales and Liverpool Railway, less than three months later, on 7 July 1896. Upton, Merseyside
Upton is a village in the northern part of the Wirral Peninsula, England, and is situated within of Birkenhead, of the Dee Estuary, a similar distance from the River Mersey, and from Liverpool Bay. It is in the parish of Overchurch and administratively, the village is a Upton (ward), ward of the Metropolitan Borough of Wirral in the metropolitan county of Merseyside. Upton was in the Historic counties of England, traditional county of Cheshire. At the 2011 United Kingdom census, 2011 census, the population was 16,130. Upton was originally settled as an Anglo-Saxon farming community, and remained as a farming community until the village's rapid urbanisation and expansion from the mid-19th century. This was brought about by the development of Liverpool as a major port, with rail and road links across the Mersey estuary. John Summers & Sons
John Summers & Sons Ltd was a major United Kingdom iron and steel producer, latterly based on the Dee Estuary at Shotton, Flintshire. The company was absorbed into British Steel Corporation in 1967; British Steel became Corus in 1999 and this company was taken over by Tata Steel in 2007. Early life The founder, John Summers, was born in Bolton, Lancashire in 1822. While working as a clogger, he visited the Great Exhibition in 1851, where he bought a nail making machine, and commenced making nails with which to fasten the iron strips on to the soles of clogs. In 1852, Summers moved into Sandy Bank Iron Forge at Stalybridge, where he successfully concentrated on the production of clog irons and nails. He then purchased land near the forge, and built a new ironworks, known as the Globe Works. The Business John Summers died on 10 April 1876, at the age of 54. List Of Preserved BR Standard Class 9F Locomotives
This is a list of BR Standard Class 9F steam locomotives that survive in preservation. Nine 9F locomotives avoided being scrapped at the end of steam traction on British Railways. Seven locomotives were obtained from Woodham Brothers scrapyard in Barry, Vale of Glamorgan, South Wales. The other two were preserved upon withdrawal: 92220 ''Evening Star'' -- the last steam loco built by BR -- joined the National Collection; the artist and conservationist, David Shepherd bought 92203 directly from BR in 1967. As of 2019, three of the locomotives have not been restored to working order since withdrawal: 92207, 92219 and 92245. All were stored rusting in the open air for 20 or more years and had various parts removed. Most have since received at least some cosmetic restoration to prevent them from deteriorating further.
