Mark Gitenstein
Mark Henry Gitenstein (born March 7, 1947) is an American lawyer and diplomat who is serving as the United States ambassador to the European Union since 2022. He was nominated by President Joe Biden on July 27, 2021, and confirmed by the United States Senate on December 18, 2021. He formerly served as the United States ambassador to Romania from 2009 to 2012; he was nominated by President Barack Obama on June 11, 2009 and confirmed by the Senate on July 8, 2009. Early life and education Gitenstein is of Romanian Jewish heritage, as his grandparents were immigrants from Botoșani, Romania in the late-19th century. Gordon Sondland
Gordon David Sondland (born July 16, 1957) is an American businessman. He is the founder and chairman of Provenance Hotels. He also served as the United States Ambassador to the European Union from 2018 to 2020. In November 2019, Sondland testified as a witness at the impeachment inquiry against Donald Trump. He was fired by Trump on February 7, 2020, two days after the conclusion of Trump's impeachment trial. Early life Sondland was born to a Jewish family in Mercer Island, Washington, the son of Frieda (Piepsch) and Gunther Sondland. His mother fled Germany before the Second World War to Uruguay, where after the war she reunited with his father, who had served in the French Foreign Legion. In 1953, the Sondlands relocated to Seattle where they opened a dry-cleaning business. Sondland has a sister 18 years his senior. Anthony Luzzatto Gardner (born May 16, 1963) was the U.S. Ambassador to the European Union. He was sworn in on February 18, 2014, and left his post on January 20, 2017. In 2020, he authored the book ''Stars with Stripes'' which "provides an analytic and accessible approach to how the US and EU have worked together efficiently on numerous core issues such as trade, the digital economy, climate change and more." The book was included in the list of best foreign policy books of 2020 published by Foreign Affairs magazine.
