Under The Sun (1998 Film)
''Under the Sun'' ( sv, Under solen) is a Swedish film which was released to cinemas in Sweden on 25 December 1998, directed by Colin Nutley, adapted from the short story ''The Little Farm'' by H. E. Bates. The film stars Rolf Lassgård, Helena Bergstrom (who is married to director Nutley), and Johan Widerberg. Set in Sweden in the mid-1950s, the film was nominated for the 1999 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Plot The film begins with a voice over quotation of the verse from the Book of Ecclesiastes which includes the language, "for every thing there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven". After the death of his mother over a decade ago, Olof (Rolf Lassgård), an illiterate farmer, lives alone on his family farm. Olof can't read, so his young friend Erik (Johan Widerberg)—who has been a sailor and who claims to have known various American celebrities while staying in the United States of America and to have bedded hundreds of women—handles al ... Colin Nutley
Colin James Nutley (born 28 February 1944) is an English director successful in the Swedish film industry. Career Nutley went to Portsmouth Art College and began his career in British television as a graphic designer. He then turned to drama and documentary film-making for ITV, BBC and Channel 4. He directed the first two episodes of children's television series ''Press Gang'', but was unhappy with the final edit so asked for his name to be removed from the credit He was, however, the driving force behind Southern Television's ITV-networked children's series The Flockton Flyer, taking personal responsibility for much of the casting, and acting as producer of the first series (filmed 1976, broadcast 1977) and producer/director of the second series (filmed 1977, broadcast 1978). Nutley's work in Sweden began with the making of ''Annika'', a TV series about a Swedish girl who spent three weeks on the Isle of Wight as a language student in England. SS ''Andrea Doria'' , was an ocean liner for the Italian Line (Società di navigazione Italia) home-ported in Genoa, Italy, known for its sinking in 1956, where of the 1,706 passengers and crew, 1,660 were rescued, while 46 passengers and crew died. Named after the 16th-century Genoese admiral Andrea Doria, the ship had a gross register tonnage of 29,100 and a capacity of about 1,200 passengers and 500 crew. Of all Italy's ships at the time, ''Andrea Doria'' was the largest, fastest and supposedly safest. Launched on 16 June 1951, the ship began her maiden voyage on 14 January 1953. On 25 July 1956, while ''Andrea Doria'' was approaching the coast of Nantucket, Massachusetts, United States, bound for New York City, the eastbound of the Swedish American Line collided with her. Struck in the side, the top-heavy ''Andrea Doria'' immediately started to list severely to starboard, which left half of her lifeboats unusable.
