Umma University
Umma University is the first Islamic institution of higher education in Kenya, offering certificate, diploma, degree and postgraduate studies. Umma University was founded in 1997. The main campus is located in Kajiado County. Other branch is located in Thika-Makongeni off Garissa road. Umma University is the brainchild of Africa Muslim Agency (currently known as Direct Aid International), a non-governmental organization which was founded by a Kuwait medical doctor, Abdulrahman Al-Sumait. It was founded in the year 1998 as Thika College for Sharia and Islamic Studies and was registered under Ministry of Education in the year 2001, and subsequently authorized to offer Diploma programmes in Islamic Sharia and Islamic Studies. Abdul Rahman Al-Sumait
Dr. Abd Al-Rahman bin Hamood Al-Sumait ( ar, عبد الرحمن السميط, ; 15 October 1947 – 15 August 2013) was an Islamic scholar, medical practitioner and humanitarian from Kuwait. He was known for his philanthropic works in more than 29 African countries. Education Born and raised in Kuwait, Al-Sumait was a doctor specializing in internal medicine and gastroenterology before becoming involved in charity work. He graduated from the University of Baghdad with a BS in Medicine and Surgery, a diploma in Tropical Diseases from the University of Liverpool in 1974. He completed his postgraduate from McGill University in Canada, specializing in internal medicine and digestive systems. Career as Physician Al-Sumait practiced medicine at Montreal Public Hospital from 1974 to 1978. Islam In Kenya
Islam is a minority religion in Kenya representing 10.9% of the Kenyan population, or approximately 5.2 million people. The Kenyan coast is mostly populated by Muslims. Nairobi has several mosques and a notable Muslim population. The faith was introduced by merchants visiting the Swahili coast, which led to local conversions and foreign Muslims becoming assimilated. This would later result in the emergence of several officially Muslim political entities in the region. The majority of Muslims in Kenya are Sunni Muslims forming 81% of the Muslim Population, 7% identify as Shia. There are also sizeable populations of Ibadism, Quranist and Ahmadi adherents. This is a list of universities and colleges in Kenya. Kenya has a number of universities and other institutions of higher learning. There are 30 public universities, 30 chartered private universities and 30 universities with Letter of Interim Authority (LIA). These universities are established through institutional Acts of Parliament under the Universities Act, 2012 which provides for the development of university education, the establishment, accreditation and governance of universities. Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta (born 26 October 1961) is a Kenyan politician who served as the fourth president of Kenya from 2013 to 2022. The International University of Africa ( ar, جامعة افريقيا العالمية) is a private university in Khartoum, Sudan. It is a member of the Federation of the Universities of the Islamic World. The university has faculties of Education and Humanities, Shariah and Islamic Studies, of Pure and Applied Sciences, Engineering and medicine.
