Université des Mutants (University of Mutants) is an international center of meetings and conferences on the island of Gorée, Senegal, opposite Fort d'Estrées which houses the Musée historique du Sénégal. History The institution was founded at the initiative of Leopold Sedar Senghor and the French writer and philosopher Roger Garaudy. It opened January 6, 1979 with support from UNESCO and the United Nations Programme for Development (UNDP) in addition to the initial capital of the State of Senegal and the Agence de Coopération Culturelle et Technique (ACCT). Its creation was formalized by law 81-3 February 2, 1981. It was dissolved by Act 2005-08 of 22 July 2005. Gorée
(; "Gorée Island"; ) is one of the 19 (i.e. districts) of the city of Dakar, Senegal. It is an island located at sea from the main harbour of Dakar (), famous as a destination for people interested in the Atlantic slave trade. Its population as of the 2013 census was 1,680 inhabitants, giving a density of , which is only half the average density of the city of Dakar. Gorée is both the smallest and the least populated of the 19 of Dakar. Roger Garaudy
Roger Garaudy (; 17 July 1913 – 13 June 2012) was a French philosopher, French resistance fighter and a communist author. He converted to Islam in 1982. In 1998, he was convicted for several years and fined for Holocaust denial under French law for claiming that the mass slaughter of six million Jews was a "myth". Early life and education Roger Garaudy was born in Marseille to working class Catholic parents. At the age of 14, Garaudy converted to Protestantism. He fought during World War II and received the Croix de Guerre. After a period as a Vichy France prisoner of war in Algeria, Garaudy joined the French Resistance working for resistance radio and the newspaper ''Liberté''. Political career Garaudy joined the French Communist Party in 1933. By mid 1940s, Garaudy was considered a leading polemicist within the party.
