Magdalena Abakanowicz University of Fine Arts () is a major Academy of Fine Arts, fine-art academy located in the city of Poznań, in west-central Poland. It was founded in 1919 as the State School of Decorative Arts (Pol. ''Państwowa Szkoła Sztuki Zdobniczej).'' History 1919–1938: State School of Decorative Arts Following many efforts raised during the partitions of Poland, on November 1, 1919, the State School of Decorative Arts (''Państwowa Szkoła Sztuk Zdobnicznych'') was opened in Poznań. In 1921, the school was put under state government and started operating under the name of the State School of Decorative Arts and the Art Industry. Joanna Hoffmann-Dietrich
Dr. Joanna Hoffmann-Dietrich (born 1968 in Poznań) is an artist and academic and a professor at the University of Fine Arts in Poznań in Poland and a Fellow of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage in Poland. From 1987 to 1992 Hoffmann-Dietrich studied for her degree at the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznań (now the University of Fine Arts) before starting her MA in 1992 and gained her PhD in 2000. Hoffmann-Dietrich mostly works in the fields of multimedia installations, experimental video-animation, and book art. Piotr Szyhalski is a Polish-born and trained multimedia artist working in the United States since 1990. He has produced poster designs, mail art, photographs, painted murals, prints, web-based digital art, sound art, large installations, and public performances. Since 1998 he has worked under the pseudonym Labor Camp. Life and education From Kalisz in central Poland, Szyhalski studied at the Academy of Visual Arts in Poznań graduating in 1989 with an MFA in drawing under Waldemar Świerzy and an MFA in poster design under Jarosław Kozłowski. Waldemar Świerzy
Waldemar Świerzy ( 1931 – 27 November 2013) was a Polish artist. Life Born in Katowice, Poland, he graduated from the Kraków Academy of Fine Arts in 1952. He was subsequently Professor in the University of Fine Arts in Poznań from 1965 and Professor in the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw from 1994. In 1992 the government of Poland issued a postage stamp to honor one of his Cyrk posters, 'Clown with derby'. Swierzy is one of the Polish School of Posters' most prolific artists, having created over 2500 posters. He employed unusual concepts with a variety of techniques, frequently mirroring Polish social history from 1950s through 1980s, with a myriad of styles: folk art from the 50s, pop art from the 60s, portraits from the 70s, and TV images from the 80s. Monika Sosnowska
Monika Sosnowska (born 7 May 1972 in Ryki) is a Polish installation artist. In 2003, she received the Bâloise Prize at Art Basel as well as the Polityka's Passport award given by Poland's most prestigious Weekly newspaper, weekly. Life and career Sosnowska studied at the Painting Department of the University of Fine Arts in Poznań (1993–1998), and the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam (1999–2000). During her final years at the Poznań academy, she found that the "painting started to escape her canvas." She began to create works that played with both two-dimensional painting and three-dimensional space, finally giving up on canvas altogether and instead using space itself as a sort of three-dimensional painting. Marcin Rożek
Marcin Rożek (8 November 1885 – 19 May 1944) was a Polish sculptor and painter and co-founder and professor at the School of Decorative Arts in Poznań. Rożek is most closely associated with the region of Greater Poland and the city of Poznań, in particular, although he was a well-established and highly regarded artist throughout Poland during the 1920s and 1930s. Imprisoned by the Nazis in 1941, he was transported to Auschwitz concentration camp, where he died of exhaustion in 1944. Krzysztof Olszewski (born 11 June 1970, in Kartuzy, Poland), who exhibits work as KED, is a Polish photographer and visual and installation artist.
