United States Post Office–Ansonia Main
The U.S. Post Office-Ansonia Main, also known as the Ansonia Main Post Office, is located at 237 Main Street in Ansonia, Connecticut. Designed by Oscar Wenderoth and completed in 1914, it is one of the more architecturally sophisticated buildings in Ansonia's central business district. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. Description and history The Ansonia Main Post Office is located on the east side of Main Street in downtown Ansonia, between Bridge Street and Kingston Drive. It is a single story steel and masonry structure, finished in limestone. Its front facade is smooth limestone with a recessed center entrance area supported by four Ionic columns set ''in antes''. It is covered by a low hip roof, which is obscured by a balustrade set above a dentillated cornice. Ansonia is a city in New Haven County, Connecticut, United States. Located on the Naugatuck River, it is immediately north of Derby, and about northwest of New Haven. The city is part of the Naugatuck Valley Planning Region. The population was 18,918 at the time of the 2020 census. The ZIP code for Ansonia is 06401. The city is served by the Metro-North Railroad. Ansonia Station is a stop on the railroad passenger commuter service's Waterbury Branch connecting to New York's Grand Central Terminal. Ansonia also is served by the Connecticut Transit bus carrier. Connecticut Route 8 serves Ansonia (Northbound, Exit 18; Southbound, Exit 19). Ansonia was founded in 1844 by merchant and philanthropist Anson Green Phelps. Oscar Wenderoth
Oscar Wenderoth (1871–1938) was an American architect who served as director of the Office of the Supervising Architect from 1912 to 1915. He is identified as the architect of many government buildings built during that period, including some listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Wenderoth was born in Philadelphia in 1871 and was the son of the noted photographer Frederick August Wenderoth, a pioneer "...in addressing the public's desire for colored photographs." Early in his architectural career Oscar worked for the New York City firm of Carrere and Hastings. He first joined the Office of Supervising Architect as a senior architectural draftsman in 1897, working in the office for three separate time periods before being appointed as its director.
