United States Joint Congressional Committee On Inaugural Ceremonies
A Joint Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies is a special joint committee of the United States Congress formed every four years to manage the presidential inaugurations. Such committee has been formed every four years since the 1901 inauguration of William McKinley. The members are sitting U.S. senators and representatives. Typically, the House members include the speaker of the House as well as the House majority and minority leaders. The Senate members are drawn from the leadership of the Senate Committee on Rules and Administration (previously known by other names). A senator acts as chair, and is therefore drawn from the majority party of the Senate. A select or special committee of the United States Congress is a United States Congressional committee, congressional committee appointed to perform a special function that is beyond the authority or capacity of a Standing committee (United States Congress), standing committee. A select committee is usually created by a resolution that outlines its duties and powers and the procedures for appointing members. Select and special committees are often investigative, rather than legislative, in nature though some select and special committees have the authority to draft and report legislation. Augustus Octavius Bacon (October 20, 1839February 14, 1914) was a Confederate soldier, segregationist, and U.S. politician. A member of the Democratic Party, he served as a U.S. senator from Georgia, becoming the first senator to be directly elected after the ratification of the 17th Amendment, and rose to the position of president pro tempore of the United States Senate. Controversy arose during the American Civil Rights Movement over a provision in his will that created a racially segregated park in his hometown of Macon, which led to two U.S. Supreme Court decisions. Lee Slater Overman
Lee Slater Overman (January 3, 1854December 12, 1930) was a Democratic U.S. senator from the state of North Carolina between 1903 and 1930. He was the first US Senator to be elected by popular vote in the state, as the legislature had appointed senators prior to passage of the 17th Amendment to the US Constitution authorizing popular elections of senators. He served as a senator until 1930 when he died when he was two years into his fifth term. Early life and education Overman was born in Salisbury, North Carolina, the son of William H. and Mary E.
