Union Hotel (Wakefield, New Hampshire)
The Union Hotel is a historic hotel building at 254 Main Street in the Union village of Wakefield, New Hampshire. Built in 1855 and repeatedly enlarged, it is one of only two surviving 19th-century railroad hotels in the town. It was operated until 1960, and for many years housed the local VFW post. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. It is now home to the Greater Wakefield Resource Center. Description and history The Union Hotel is located in southernmost Wakefield, in the village of Union at the northwest corner of Main and Church streets. It is essentially a complex of connected wood-frame structures, most stories in height and covered in wooden clapboards. It consists of a main block and several wings, which primarily housed hotel rooms, arranged around a central courtyard and connected by covered passages. Union is a village and census-designated place (CDP) in the town of Wakefield, Carroll County, New Hampshire, United States. It had a population of 196 at the 2020 census. Union has a separate ZIP code (03887) from the rest of the town of Wakefield. Geography Union is in the southern corner of the town of Wakefield, along the Branch River, a tributary of the Salmon Falls River. It is bordered to the west by the town of Middleton and to the southeast by the town of Milton, both in Strafford County. New Hampshire Route 16 forms the northeastern edge of the CDP; the highway leads north to Ossipee and south to Rochester. Carroll County is a county in the U.S. state of New Hampshire. As of the 2020 census, the population was 50,107, making it the third-least populous county in New Hampshire. Its county seat is Ossipee. The county was created in 1840 and organized at Ossipee from towns removed from Strafford County.
